Questions About ABD’s.

“How do you feel when you see a blatant ABD in a web video between two pros?”

I don’t feel anything specifically but there are a million different breeds of ABD’s. Here are a few.

First, there’s the situation in which rider 1 does something epic and then rider 2 does it without realizing. If rider 2 didn’t know and finds out after that rider 1 already did it and was saving the footage, rider 2 should usually bin his footage and let rider 1 have it. Usually. If he puts it out anyway, knowing rider 1 already did it, that could be considered really disrespectful and in bad taste. Have I done this in my video projects? Sure, but in the 2 instances I can think of, one time we just really wanted to disrespect the rider who we ABDed because we thought he was a mark (we filmed the clip not knowing he had done it of course). And in the other instance the footage was just so epic and the rider took 100+ brutal falls that we couldn’t justify not putting it out. I approached the person who did it first and let him know that we had filmed it not knowing he already did it and he was cool about it.

Another situation would be where rider 1 does something and then rider 2 does it and puts it out, unaware the the trick had already been documented. This happened to us in Football: Garrett Reeves did an awesome wallride:

And then after the video came out, we realized that Sandy Carson did the same wallride in his Grounded section (it’s 7:20 in right here, although to be fair Sandy used a board on the landing). We probably would have scrapped the clip if we knew.

The final example I’ll give is when a company goes to a famous city and films nothing but ABD’s. This is just weird to me. When I go to a new place to ride, I go out of my way to watch videos from that area to see certain spots we should go to. That’s just common sense. So then when a team goes somewhere and just films stock stuff that other dudes have already done, that just seems trashy to me. Get a little local knowledge before you go somewhere so you can try and find something original to do. On one hand, you can’t hate on them for going out and having fun, but at the same time it comes off as disrespectful to the locals and just lame. It’s not the kind of thing that would make me mad, but it definitely makes me think someone is kind of a goofball if they just go somewhere and Guitar Hero a bunch of legendary footage.
