Will There Ever Be A TCU For Flatland?

Will there ever be a flatland oriented The Come Up exclusive?

Will there ever be more flatland on TCU? I ask because so many dudes flat in street and park, but flatland itself does have the huge scene and street riders have always pretended like it was some alien offshoot of BMX, rather than the basis.

Back in the day guys like Andrew Faris, and Paul Osicka had the whole BMX world interested, not just flatland only types. That seems less common these days and I was curious why.

First off: Andrew Faris and Paul Osicka didn’t really have the BMX world interested; the BMX world was still having it’s interests curated by magazines, who chose to print flatland content.

I don’t think anyone I knew at the time really cared about those riders (because let’s face it NOBODY understands flatland tricks besides flatlanders), we just knew who they were because they were in magazines and magazines were the only way we had to learn about BMX. As soon as magazines started slashing their pages, flatland was the first to go (because the magazines knew it was the least popular discipline) and I don’t think the average street/park/trails guy missed it. There’s a reason flatland has become it’s own separate discipline that rarely gets mainstream BMX coverage; most riders just don’t understand it.

I’ve thought about doing a flatland section on TCU, but the idea never really went anywhere for the same reason that we never tried doing a BMX racing site: it just isn’t popular enough.

The most popular racing website gets like 1 percent of the traffic that TCU gets. I’m assuming flatland is probably in the same ballpark. Of course on some level I’d like to be able to promote flatland since I recognize that it’s awesome and an important part of BMX, but at the end of the day I can’t possibly justify hiring a guy to post on my website every day if I’m not getting some significant number of page views from it. And I’m not sure that flatland is big enough for that to happen.

Of course if some kind hearted flatlander wanted to run a flatland sub-blog on TCU for free, I’d be happy to discuss and they should email me at adam AT thecomeupbmx do net.
