I like Wiz. I mean aside from his riding which I’ve obviously been a huge fan of since I first saw him in a video, he just seems like a pretty down to earth guy and he seems pretty appreciative of what he’s got and humble about what he’s done, despite all you little shits running your mouthes about him all the time. The other day I posted up “3 Rail Firsts” features that I did years ago with Lino, George D and Ralph Sinisi and Wiz seemed like a logical candidate to hit up next. I even threw in some bonus questions about some rail-related stuff I was curious about. Enjoy.
Turndown to icepick: First one I did was out in Cali somewhere. Me and Van were out there for a contest right when I got on Schwinn and Losey met up with us to shoot Van the fuf’ing this pool right near the hotel. We got that done and went to pedal around a little just to see if we saw anything else. We ended up finding a rail that i thought it could work down. First try I just did a little twitch to ice, then second try got an okay one that Losey shot a sequence of. I hadn’t done that trick on a real rail since then ’til me and Bob (Scerbo) were working on Please Kill Me. I did one on an 11 stair out in Trenton for that video and it worked real easy. Then a few weeks later Z flew out to work on my Ride interview and I went back to shoot a sequence of it and under picked. Z had flown out one way and we were driving him back to Cali to shoot me, Bob, Stricker, and Corey along the way. The underpick snapped two of my ribs and we left for Cali to finish my interview.
Manual to backwards rail: This one was always a dream trick for me ever since I started doing manual to backwards grinds at skateparks. I tried it a long time ago when the Props guys were out here filming the Garrett Byrnes interview and I smacked my face on the rail. The clip is in the credits of that issue. That was the first time I tried it. It spooked me a little so i didn’t try it again for a few years. Then while filming for Wide Awake nightmare I went to do it again on this rail in Princeton and the same thing happened, my front wheel hit on the way up so I stiff armed the rail to make sure the face didn’t get it again. Few trys later I got it done.
Icepick to 180: This is another one that as soon as I learned the trick on flat ledges I needed to find a rail for it. That rail in Jersey was good for it but I didn’t know the rail got slow. Me, Bob, and Z went to the rail while I was working on my Ride interview still. I tried it over and over for a while and I didn’t know the rail needs wax after riding it a while. It was sliding perfect when we first got there and then I kept sticking and getting tossed and never got it. Then a few weeks later we ended up going back on the Red Bull Mean Streets thing so I brought a big candle with me and made some skrilla.
Did you only do the manual to backwards rail once? Have you seen it done since?
Yeah I only ever did the manual to backwards once on a real rail down steps I think. I think Snowden did one in something, not sure who else, I bet someone has.
Who do you think is currently pushing shit when it comes to rail tricks?
Lino G changed the whole rail game with the skinny dialed shit. At the moment I dunno, seems like Josh Harrington is always doing wild new shit on some legit size joints.
How clicked does a turndown need to be to count when you’re doing it into a trick like an icepick? That’s the kind of trick where a lot of people will bitch about it not being clicked when it’s done in or out of a grind.
I always hear people bitching about how unclicked shit is sometimes, but that shit is scary into an icepick yo. I always try and get the bars at backwards at least, depends on what trick I’m doing it in or out of, and on what set up kinda makes the difference on if it’s going to be just barely there or clicked.
What’s your rail game like these days?
My rail game has been put on hold lately, I been messing with some handy cap set up rails and did some backwards shit for the 2X4 video but I don’t ride them as much as I used to. Ever since Peco’s been gone I haven’t had a nice session rail to keep up on all the moves.
What are your thoughts on using wax on rails or ledges? Some dudes seem like they get bummed seeing riders waxing spots, but I think it’s just a necessary part of doing tech tricks on imperfect spots.
I am a fan of the 3 wick candle, sometimes you need a little butter. The people who hate on it are probably the ones who ride the spots that are already waxed but are too lazy to do it themselves. If I didn’t use wax I never woulda done the icepick 180 on the rail that day.
