Ben Hucke is a nice guy and has been killing it with lots of dialed web videos lately. I hit him up with an interview to find out more about this north west dude.
State your name, where you’re from and how you got into riding.
Ben Hucke, Portland, OR. I got a 16″ Schwinn Predator when I was 4yrs old, right around the same time I watched Pee Wee’s Big Adventure and saw some dude doing a surfer… grabbed my bike, tried it, ate shit and I was hooked haha
I grew up watching Blueprint. What was it like filming for that video, was that the first coverage you ever really got?
Filming for Blueprint was the best time ever, no drama, Twin Finn didn’t hate everyone, eveyone was just learning everything they pulled in the video so we were all hyped. Everything was new, new spots, new tricks and new homies, It was really the beginning of our whole scene.
You’ve been riding for Haro/Premium for the past few years right? How did you initially get on that team and what’s it like riding for them?
I was riding Burnside one morning back in like ’97 I think, Chad Degroot and some other random people from a shop showed up and rode around for a bit. They asked if I wanted to do a show with them that weekend and from then on Haro always hooked me up when I needed stuff.
Riding for Haro now is awesome, a lot has changed in the last few years. I think Haro was reborn when Dave left and Mirraco started, like a huge corporate weight was lifted off Haro and everyone could breath and do and make whatever they wanted again. Haro isn’t that big, there’s only a handfull of people who work there and everything being made these days is 100% rider input. It’s real chill and layed back like it was when it started and I wasn’t even born.

What happened with Adio?
We went on tour in Bams Adio tour bus, every spot we showed up to a million kids rushed the bus screaming “where’s Bam oh my GOD BAAAAMMM”!? They were all bummed when 8 bikes came out of the back and no Bam. Adio probably got a million letters from little kids saying they sucked because they were let down by BMX. I actually have no idea what happened but I can’t say I didn’t see it coming from the beginning.
How’d you get on Osiris?
Not really sure, I couldn’t be happier though, Kyle gets stuff done, guys on the team are all good dudes and the guys at Osiris are doing everything right.
Similarly, I recently accused you of stroking the penis of Kyle Carlson on the site. True or false???
False. I can’t even believe that’s something that’s real!
You’ve had a few dope web videos lately for Goods (here) and Osiris (here)… are you stoked on filming web videos? It seems like they get a lot of hate online from pro’s who would rather film for DVDs, what’s your take on that?
I don’t think web edits are something you should go out and huck yourself for. Save that shit for DVD, Just like you wouldn’t post a banger photo on the web before it ran in the magazine or got used for an ad or something. Web vids should just be normal everyday riding…like whatever you’ve been up to lately.
I was lurking your Myspace and saw that you said you were going to 180 barspin this:

Seriously???
We went to shoot that thing probably ten times so far, tried and tried until I puked more than once. I threw the bars a few times but the closest I came was 180 half bar cus it hit my knee. Fudger didn’t even snap that one cus he thought I was crashing. One of these days it’ll happen, I can’t let it go.
Who are your favorite dudes to ride with? Favorite photographer to work with?
Jesse Whaley, Sean Burns, Chet Blacksmith, ScottHD and anyone else who’s chill.
Shooting, Fudger is always funny to shoot with, something ridiculous always happens. Jeff Allen is good to shoot with, you just know the photo is gonna look amazing.
What cell phone do you have and why?
Sidekick 08, Haro bought it for me after I got robbed by three homies in AZ. Idiots stole my Sidekick LX, the cops pinged my phone and caught them.

Are you seriously married?
I’m not married, however I am about to be a father any minute now. I’m gonna keep it old school and get married when the dust settles a bit.
What are you going to name your kid and why?
We decided on Levi, after the video came out this year. Jk… Actually the name Levi randomly came up, my Grandma was really into it and I was trying for a good old American name without using Dakota or any other BMXers name I’m friends with. So far his name has been a good fit for the whole family so I’m stoked.
Name your top 5 current rappers.
Will Smith… nah haha.
Mac Dre, Eazy E, Tupac, I just heard some Game today it’s been a minute got stoked, 50′s got it made too. Pretty played out list of rappers but I don’t care I’m into it.
If you had to create an analogy that compared The Come Up, Vital and Defgrip to non-website things in real life, which would each one be?
Fred, Barney and Dino from the Flinstones. You can guess who’s who.
I have no words. How do you want to end this interview?
Thanks to all my family and friends for being there for me, I’ve been through some rough times. BMX and the friends I’ve made through it are the reasons I’m still breathing.
