Harry Main has been blowing minds lately. His lip tricks are on another planet. I wanted to know more about him, so I hit him up on Myspace to find out what I could about him. Based on this interview I’d have to say he seems like a pretty good kid with a decent head on his shoulders, so as long as he keeps the banging Vimeo clips rolling in, he’s A-OK in my book!
So since you’re a fairly new face to a lot of people reading this, who are you, where are you from and when did you start riding?
Harry Main, I’m 18, I’m from Liverpool, England. I started riding like 6 years ago in 2003 or something.
Who were your early influences in riding? Locals, pro’s, videos etc…
I was well into Scotty Cranmer for a while, always have been into Bestwick and Mirra, also was pretty siked on Mike Taylor he was a local pro at a jam I went to. I was just learning and he was doing like feeble to whip and shit, it was pretty sick! Also I seen Fenlon do a gap to wallride at the same jam, I was so siked on it! I used to watch all kinds of BMX videos! Props usually when I could afford one! I watched No Problemo like 100 times i got it free ha ha!
You have earned a reputation lately for taking lip tricks to a whole new level. How do you go about progressing to the level of doing stuff like truckdrivers to footjam 180s?
Ahh that one. I actually got truck to footjam like 4th or 5th try so it was sick, I’d been doing the whole 3 to footjam stuff for a while so I just thought [to] bar that there lol. So I didn’t really have to work on progression there it was just kinda like I just did it. As for progression on new crazy tricks I just like to try something out like 3 or 4 times to see what could happen. If I don’t get it around or something then just give it some [time] and if it isn’t working, figure out what I’m doing wrong and do it again, theres no reason why anything should be impossible within reason.
Who do you consider on your level lip trick wise these days, like who do you look to for inspiration?
I look up to Mirra and Bestwick because they are both the most amazing riders out there. From height to style to tech! The’re the best! And as for lip tricks I seriously don’t session lip tricks as much as I should, I just like to go high on spines and stuff and then when I can get into a tech sesson after that I will. I just think it makes a better web video with a load of banger lip tricks. But once I start doing some tech shit I love it!
I’ve been kinda alluding to the made up idea that there might be a little battle of sorts going back and forth between you and Mark Webb since you’re both obviously on top of your game at ramp riding, is there any truth to that?
I honestly don’t have anything going on in my head, I can promise you that, maybe coming from the other way but I can’t speak for Mark, you would have to ask him. I just want to ride my bike and sesson with anybody who is down to session! I guess it’s fun when somebody drops a new web video because it’s good to see whats possible you know?
Do you ever ride street or trails? It seems like all the footage I’ve seen of you lately is park, not that there’s anything wrong with that.
I’ve never really had the opportunity to ride good enough trails nevermind film at them, the locals in Southport once told me I kinda wasn’t welcome there so I never bothered making the effort to ride there again, which is fair enough whatever you know, they took over them after a while when the first dude who made them stopped so whatever I guess they own them. Fair enough, no big deal, as for future trails work I’m going to shoot some pictures and film a web video on trails this year and hopefully ride Dew Tour dirt. And as for street, I do actually have a few street clips filmed, just wouldn’t want to ever slow a video down with my street stuff you know? But I had 2 street shots in my Ride UK interveiw. I just prefer park, I personally think it feels better..
I noticed you in the video of Jeremiah Smith doing his downside whip to vader jam… that’s a pretty ridiculous lip trick, do you and him feed off of each other when learning new stuff?
Since I got to Woodward 6 weeks ago, me and Jeremiah have been sessioning like crazy! Just riding really hard and having fun with silly footjam stuff.
What’s the biggest difference between England and America that you’ve noticed so far?
American chicks are hotter! And they love english accents.
I know a lot of contest dudes are in the gym working out all the time to stay in shape for contests and avoid injuries, have they gotten you in on that yet?
Yeah I started the gym 5 weeks ago when I got to the states and got on a healthy diet, a lot of organic food and chicken and protein shakes, you know the normal healthy things, I just want to treat my body the way I want it to work. I want to have good stamina for riding contests and I want to be in shape, I know alot of people that think it’s stupid going to the gym and working out and eating healthy but I think it’s amazing how much you can get out of it, feeling fresher and less worn out is never going to be a bad thing.
It seems like sort of overnight you got a bunch of big name sponsors… Mirraco, Nike, Monster. How did all that come about?
Well as for Nike they have been with me from the beginning, I’ve been with 6.0 for around 2 years now I’m sure, maybe a year and a half. But I got with Monster Energy and then the guys at Mirraco were interested in what we could figure out. At the time I wasn’t under a contract at KHE so we got a deal sorted and I love being with Mirra and his guys. They treat me well, they get everything done and make me feel welcome at the company at all times, give me the opportunity to represent amazing parts frames and bikes.
Did you getting on Mirraco and Spinner getting off have anything to do with each other? It seemed kind of strange that they picked you up, and then they dropped Spinner a month or two later.
I honestly don’t know anything about Mike Spinner, I’ve met him a few times and he seemed cool enough but I honestly don’t know anything about what went on with him and Mirraco. I guess Dave just wanted to head in a different direction.
The flair to footjam was the craziest thing I’ve seen from you so far. That’s just such an insane trick, what went into learning that? I think a lot of people assumed that your foot would get hurt in the process, is there any truth to that?
The flair to footjam… I tried it a bunch of times and landed like in footjam, and kinda waited on getting in and then like 10th go or something just popped it in. It was one of the best tricks I’ve ever pulled, being able to invent a trick for me is so amazing. I’d of never of thought I would have brought lip tricks to another level, I’m just grateful that I’m able to do that trick I guess haha! I don’t know what to say… Thanks or something lol. There may be a new banger flair to footjam trick coming the internet’s way when i get home from the USA and finish off my next Nonstop web video.
You’ve been leaking some of your newer lip tricks online one at a time lately, have you considered starting to save up your footage for a video part any time soon? Are you sitting on any footage for upcoming projects?
Yeah I like to do all my web edits with Matty Lambert from Nonstop Video these days just because he puts it all together really well and he knows my style etc. So we don’t have to mess around… we’ll go the park, film a section, he’ll have it done when he’s ready. He’s just a top guy (apart from when he knocks him self out before he gets to film). We do have a bunch of clips saved but I’ve been in the states for so long now it’s going to be interesting riding the ramps at home and seeing what I can do on them with them feeling fresh! I can’t wait, I love making videos.
Do you think you could kick Spinner’s ass?
LOL I can’t even be bothered to answer this.
Just checking! Have you found yourself getting significantly more pro-hoe ass since you came up?
You tell me Adam, what do you think?
My man. Why is The Come Up the greatest BMX website of all time?
Is that after mirrabikeco.com, monsterenergy.com and nike6.com?
Touche. Any thanks?
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my sponsers, Nike 6.0, Monster Energy, Mirraco Bikes, My mum, Matty Lambert for making my videos, Jason for making my 3 minute video, all of my friends at home, Jamie Dobb, and Jamie and Kerry Bestwick for putting up with me these last 5 weeks!
