So there has, of course, been an outpouring of support and criticism alike on the basis of my most recent blog. One industry bigwig even told me “keep up the good work, cleaning the pussies out of BMX”. I love it! I’m like the Vagisil of freestyle over here.
But enough about track bikes and mountain bikes, this is bigger than that. The real issue here is why everyone is so offended by the fact that I have an OPINION. This isn’t the civil rights battle. This isn’t World War 2. This is just a dude who doesn’t like mountain bikes stating his opinion on the internet. And my opinion in this case isn’t that BMXers should start brutally attacking people on other types of bicycles at the skatepark, I just think that shit’s wack. To me the equivalent would be if I wrote a blog about how Jay Z’s CD, “Kingdom Come” sucks (which by the way, it does). Would all the Jay Z fan sites make hateful posts about me? Would they all come to The Come Up in large groups to insult me? Probably not. Because opinions are cool. You can have your own opinion about music and that’s cool, nobody has a problem with that when it’s about a book, or a CD or a T shirt, but as soon as I extend my opinion to another type of bike riding, things change.
A lot of people have gone so far as to say that The Come Up is ruining BMX. That fucking rules. Because if BMX is so fucking weak that the entire sport is going to crumble just because of one dude with a blog who happens to be more opinionated than most people, then it definitely doesn’t deserve to exist and I will be happy to continue to kill it. Personally I don’t need a web video, a magazine or a website in order to enjoy BMX. That shit is fun and all but I think a lot of you lose sight of the fact that the internet isn’t BMX. My guess is that anyone silly enough to claim that BMX is anywhere close to dying because of the internet just doesn’t spend enough time on his bike.
Just for fun let’s turn the tables for a second. What would I do if tomorrow I came upon a mountain bike website with an in depth description of why BMX is lame and how much cooler mountain biking is. This isn’t easy to imagine, but try. I really don’t think I’d give a shit. I might make a post about it and just point out how dumb I think it is, but I definitely wouldn’t feel angry about it, probably just very amused. And the reason why is very simple, and that’s because I’m very secure in my love of BMX. When things happen in BMX that seem like they might compromise BMX, it doesn’t bother me. When I watch a contest and I see all the triple whips, Red Bull helmets and goofy nicknames, it doesn’t bother me. When Taj signs to Giant, it doesn’t bother me. When kids ride frames with 3″ of tube between the BB and the seat clamp, it doesn’t bother me. I might not necessarily be a fan of some, or all of those things but my love for BMX is secure.
It’s like the guy you see at the bar flipping out on his girlfriend for talking to another guy. It’s kind of sad right? If he was secure in his relationship, he wouldn’t care who she was talking to and he wouldn’t have to make a scene. BMX is like a girlfriend that I know isn’t going to ever cheat on me, because I don’t have anything to prove to it and I know that no matter how stupid frames look and how lame contests are, I can still zip around my neighborhood with my friends and enjoy myself just like I did when I was 14. BMX and I are tight, I’m not worried about her leaving me or getting spoiled and I think mountain bikers and track bike kids could definitely learn a thing or two from us on that… or maybe they won’t because deep down inside they know that what they are doing is gayer than Chris Duncan taking shots of Nastazio’s cum.
Oh and one final thing… To all the fruitcake mountain bike blogs that have mentioned my site: You lose. I don’t listen to Taking Back Sunday (but I did have that first CD in 2003 and that shit was hard, don’t lie), don’t wear girls jeans and don’t live with my mom (you know this site make 5 figures a month some months, right? U mad). I am just one man with a blog. A blog that gets 3 million page views a month. A man that loves BMX, is indifferent to mountain bikes or fixed gear bikes but that is not a fan of doing tricks on either.
