Interviewing someone like Jason Enns is a funny one. When I was a kid, I idolized him because of all the technical rail tricks he innovated. My first legit BMX frame was actually his first signature frame through Volume. Fast forward 12 years later and he is an outspoken fan of my website and I’ve even gotten the chance to ride with him a few times. What a world. When I was trying to think of a person to interview for the launch of the new website, his name sprung to mind immediately for all the reasons I mentioned, and hopefully this piece does him justice.
So what is it like being Jason Enns?
It’s all I really ever have known, so normal I guess.
You’re the Volume TM now right? What does that job consist of?
Hiring, firing, updating the sites, getting tickets for team dudes, driving the van, planning trips, basically making sure everybody is having a good time.
What’s your take on the whole web video VS DVD video part thing? Your Demolition web video would have made a pretty damn good video part.
Yea, I’m torn, it’s tough because you can put in work on a web video and have a ton of people watch it once and that’s it, or you can put in a ton of work for a DVD and have a way smaller amount of people see it but watch it ’til they have it memorized. Not sure which is the way to go
Say you quit riding today and someone asked to see “what you used to do on that little bike”… what video part/magazine/etc. do you whip out that would give that person an idea of what your BMX career has been like?
I have always like the poster Little Devil did with a pic of me doing an invert. Probably my whole Dig interview. I liked my Transworld cover from Alaska a lot. Would prob show all my video parts, they each show such a different phase in my life and riding.

One of my favorite BMX covers of all time was that issue of Dig where you’re riding with your dog. Who shot that and how did it come about? Did you know it was going to end up as the cover?
Ed Docherty shot it while he was living in Vancouver. I had no idea it was gonna be the cover at all. We had just been out shooting all day for my interview and I needed to get back let the dog out. Ed rolled with me and shot a few pics as the dog pulled me through the cemetary by my place
I know you really got into better shape over the past couple years, how did you go about doing that and what made you want to change that about yourself?,
The biggest changes I made were stop eating fast food and drinking soda. I was living the same way I had my whole life. I know people say it, but shit just started to change when I hit 30. I woke up one day and i was 230 pounds and i thought if I don’t do something now, that’s it. So I changed my diet and started running and lifting weights on a daily basis, and dropped 40 pounds.
In retrospect, given your newfound healthy outlook, do you now occasionally prefer light beer since it’s drastically lower in calories?
I only drink light beer now. Natural lights or Bud Light. I don’t think the calories make a big difference since I end up drinking twice over the course of a night.
You’ve been living in Canada your whole life and then you just went ahead and moved out to California. What made you want to do that and how has it been so far?
I wanted to enjoy a few years in the sun without winter. It’s been amazing, cant see myself going back to Canada, but I guess time will tell.
What’s a trick that’s popular these days that you’re just not into?
Girl jeans.
What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever read about yourself on the internet?
I read I was a coke head somewhere, I found that pretty funny.
Can you still click inverts like it was 2001?
Hahaha, I wish, need to get back on that. I stopped doing them when that was the only pic I would ever see of myself.
Why has the predator grind never really became popular? You might be the first person to really push it after Vic Ayala invented it, but it’s fucking awesome if you ask me.
Yea thats a weird one. The trick is so cool and you never really see it. I think it’s just because of the lack of 4 peg riders these days I suppose. There is just so many spots that are perfect for the trick. I kind of hope it never catches on , so I can still have something.
Say Castillo gives you the call in a couple years and tells you your days as a pro rider are done. What do you see yourself doing?
I guess when my time in BMX is up, depending on how much time I got left on my Visa. I would get a place down on the beach for whatever amount of time I got left in the USA. Before I moved down here (Cali) I set up a nice life to come back to in Winnipeg. I got a real nice house I could see myself getting old in, with a real small mortgage. I can get a part time job and live better than I do now, thats my plan B as of now. Just might have a bit of trouble getting used to the winter again, hahahah.
