Do Web Videos Suck?

hawk_large_1
Mystic Negro put up a blog earlier today about web videos and how effective they are as a form of advertising, that I found interesting enough to comment on. Then David Lang wrote a whopped of a comment that is basically an essay in the comments that is worth reading for sure. I wrote a long winded blog recently called “Why The Web Video Won” that basically takes the opposite stance and explains why web videos have become so prevalent and why they are extremely cost effective in comparison to more traditional forms of advertising.

Chase Hawk has no relevance to this post except that he was used as an example in the comments, for the record.

web videos are good, you get to see whats going on fast. plus you cant even make a dvd for profit much anymore with people ripping them online so really its almost web video or no video, or soon enough I’d think.

  • http://metalbikesbmx.com burns

web videos. make “scrapping” seem ok. web videos make “half assing” your riding seem ok. that is not a gooood thing.

  • adam

But those are just characteristics of the trend in web videos that kids have gotten accustomed to (filming scrap shit to put online). Stuff like the Levis and Nike videos were released first as web videos, and are the opposite. Web videos can be just as good or bad as people want them to be.

the guy that runs mystic negro is like 500 pounds… his opinion means NOTHING!

  • Mike Hawk

    I like web vids

  • Durkadoodles

Only AM:PM web videos are good. Or one spot 5 trick edits.

  • Durkadoodles

web videos also suck cause people tend to use terrible music. AM:PM always has good music. Fuck gay techno dance shit. Negative Approach, Government Issue ect. ALL AWESOME BANDS. Techno dance is gay. And bad rap. Good hiphop is good. That radio shit is scum. Skatepark edits also don’t count, cause everyone knwos that it dosn’t count unless you can pull it on a street set up. Example. Frontflip over a spine is gay. Front flip down stairs rules. But the unoriginality of park riders truly shows when they ride street. They still peg hump every stall..

i think web videos suck, sorta. in a way they are good. cuz u can watch them and see a trick then try and steel it for your self. but in a way. u can get depressed seeing so meny ppl being way better then u.

Closer to 300. But, I’ll be the first one to tell you that my opinion means nothing. But still probably more than yours.

    Adam,

I just re-read your Why Web Videos Won piece (I didn’t re-read it before I wrote my bit, because I didn’t want to swipe anything from it consciously or not) and I don’t think we so much have opposite view points as I don’t think that enough people are doing the things that make web vids successful. David Lang dropped me an email and brought up how a lot of bands are now giving away music to make money on the back end (touring, merch and the like) or even just to promote the album (how many bands stream their whole album the weeks before release these days?) but if the music sucks, nobody’s gonna buy the album or see the tour.

Web videos are the same, it’s not necessarily enough to just throw your logo somewhere in a single rider video that will be posted to TCU in line with 10 other single rider videos and 4 crew videos that *DAY*. You’ve gotta do stuff to make your vids stand out, not just from all the other videos (of wildly varying quality) but also as YOUR PRODUCT.

Which is all stuff I think you said, too.

Web video’s are good, but with reason. First of all no one wants to kill them selfs for a web video riding wise. Webvideos can promote many people depending what company they ride for. I’m going to use Flybikes and a example. If your not set out to make a full dvd with parts and good montages. Their is no point in making a dvd. The cost is to high and you barley break even. So why not for a company like fly make a couple of web edits pay the editor and the filmer. It gets a ton of coverage in a month. Instead of going through the process of making a full dvd. It’s a money saver too… Don’t get me wrong every big or litte company needs a real dvd at some point of their existance to make a mark in bmx.

But I would never use clips for a web video that are just plain full length material dvd or not Shit gets forgotten way to quick on the web. Some riders feel like they are wasting time doing it. So thats why you have day’s in the life, and park or street sessions.

web videos are ok but dvd’s are always better cos you can enjoy them with friends and watch the good ones over and over on a big TV. dvds might get seen by less people but they’re gonna be seen more than once by the people who do watch them.

i find it annoying that a lot of people can’t wait long enough to put together a section worthy of a dvd because they’re too desperate to get their footage seen on the internet. it’s also annoying to see good riding going to waste on the internet.

if you put a good amount of time in to a dvd part fewer people will see it but the few who do see it will enjoy it a lot more. it depends what your priorities are i suppose.

if you make a dvd you can put it on the internet after a while anyway because if you don’t someone else will. if you are a truly original rider your tricks will still be fresh a few months after the dvd is out anyway.

  • http://www.soldoutbmx.blogspot.com soldoutbmx

web videos are good to see whats poppin, and see what people are doing, just like photo’s but its a video on the net, real dvds are better but , cos you can slap it on have a bong drink some beers then hit the trails, and watch it over and over, web vids are good to watch when your stuck at work or just need a boost of energy to go out or if your bored of all yr dvds or waiting for it to get to yr house so you can watch it. but if i video is put on line i will still buy it if i want it.

  • mysterious whigro

web vids rock. i had been away from riding for a while then i started watchin webvids n got back into it. i wouldn’t have paid for a dvd before.

  • Jared Chilko

    My web videos rock!

  • the voice of everyone

Chilko your web vids are the worst out of all of them…how you keep getting “hooked up” is beyond me.

  • larmlin

you are so dumb. truely good “park” riders are way better at “street” riding than all the “street”(delarosa, rat kid, wiz, white, black man. sylvester, butcher)guys. cranmer, enarson, doyle, josh harrington, and homan are all great examples. you should never limmit your self to one type of riding. so SHUT THE FUCK UP. the truely good “street” guys of today (reynolds, sexton, morrow, simms) all rule at park. you have no idea what you are talking about. even dehart is a park shreder. what i’m saying is that your opinion is worthless.

  • jesus(i hate chilko)

    agreed

  • killer

web vids are gayyyyyyy i mean everyone things u are sooo amazing if u put out a good video but the truth is that dude probally tried that trick 100 times my lil sis can prob do a crazy trick if she was trying it all day and on a vid it would look like she pulled it first try. plus just cause you can put out a web vid doens’t mean your good half those kids can’t even shred a park and ive seen them first hand!

  • street

what’s park got to do with it? and also, the whole point of a video part is that you do your hardest tricks, which are obviously gonna take a few goes. what’s the point of making a video of tricks that you do every day? bmx videos would never progress if you only filmed tricks that you could do first go.

  • Chilko

    It’s Chilko Time!
