Free Curbrider One Piece Crank/BB/Pedals.

John Dale sent through some info about his new Curbrider product. Basically it’s a plastic one piece bottom bracket/crank/pedal design. So you can’t pedal, but apparently there are a lot of other benefits. Here’s the thing… John wants to give away 50 pairs of this thing for FREE. So check out all the details after the jump.

UPDATE: Actually I don’t think this is a one piece design (it’d be impossible for it to get into your BB if it was one piece) but there aren’t really good pictures of it on the site. Either way.

Curbrider (www.curbrider.com) is a Tucson, Arizona based BMX company with an innovative new product, The Flow Pedals.

Curbrider would like your feedback!

If you fit one of the following categories, contact us right away to get some flow:

* Park Rider – Park riding is a game of inches. Flow pedals stabilize the bottom bracket. Pop-off with more accuracy and confidence.

* Street Rider – With a little practice, increase the height of your j-hops. Flow pedals grind.

* Vert Rider – Just like park, the best vert riders rarely pedal. Vert is also a game of accuracy and inches. With a little practice you’ll feel more confident and go higher with Flow Pedals.

* Racer – You’ve heard the story of Bubba winning a race chainless, right? The secret is flow. Throw a pair of Flow Pedals on your bike to train for flow.

For beginners, Flow Pedals are a safe alternative to the unstable bottom bracket. For experts, take your riding and confidence to the next level.

More stability means better riding…period.

Curbrider has a limited supply available to flow. Normally $50, the first 50 respondents to this message get a pair of Curbrider Flow Pedals (Prototype version 12) for free.

Please send email to info@curbrider.com or call (602)-490-0709.

As I’m reading some of these comments, one thought comes to mind.

I’ve been riding bikes since 1981 (give or take). When I turned 15 (and looked like I was like 23…facial hair, what are you gonna do), there were no shortage of people telling me how stupid it was to ride “kids bikes”… how BMX Freestyle was a fad … how it was “gay” … how I should just play football, basketball, or baseball.

I used to tell them, “don’t knock it till you try it.”

Not trying to be a smartass (that usually happens after my third pabst), but FWIW by weight my bike is 98% BMX and 2% scooter.

  • http://www.redendo.com John Dale

Our first proof of concept was flatland pegs through the b/b with a 14mm rear axle. It worked so good that we decided to step it up, do a real design, and adapt them to a profile spindle. The pegs hurt my feet quickly, so I commissioned a welded version that was more platform-like…but that shit weighed like 10lbs. Still, though, it was soo good. When I got our first rideble version off the injection molder I was extremely stoked. Took a ton of weight off my bike, gave me more control, and reduced probability for injury (had a sinner lately?).

But yeah, the pegs through the b/b was definitely the first version.

Having ridden for a little longer than John Dale–since 1978–I am old an fusty and confused. I’m really not getting these things…seems like not having a forward/backward foot would screw up your flow in a park, not augment it. Also, I’m confused as to why the video was so focused on the drawbacks of having to work on one’s bike all the time, or why someone would let that girl hammer the shit out of a decent pair of cranks. Profile makes a perfectly useable crank tool to hammer on. I also find 48 spline a bit of a pain, so I solved it easily by using Primo cranks.

I’m too old to call the man names–at least he was motivated to do something. The scooter-ization of BMX is disturbing, though. It’s only a matter of time until someone hooks these up to a brakeless Killorado, and then I ask you: What is the functional difference between that and a scooter?

I think this is great feedback. Thank you.

“seems like not having a forward/backward foot would screw up your flow in a park, not augment it.”

When riding through a transition, offset feet generate an uneven torque that is dangerous and difficult to compensate for. It takes years to develop an asymmetric musculature to compensate for it. Stephen Murray’s crash was caused when “…his left foot slipped off the pedal about 30 feet in the air, causing his weight to shift violently.”(http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/07/11/AR2008071102842_2.html) Over time this offset torque causes uneven wear in the human physiology (especially for riders with good flow who rarely pedal). Our product encourages symmetric muscle/skeletal development, something that will pay dividends into your fifties, brother.

“why someone would let that girl hammer the shit out of a decent pair of cranks”
Personally, I would let Jordann hammer the shit out of whatever she wanted. ;) But the point of that video was that the drive train takes the most abuse of any other part on the bike, and requires the most maintenance. Some people like riding more than working on their bikes. Our setup takes far less maintenance, making more time for riding. It’s also about 1/5 the price of the higher-end drive trains.

“What is the functional difference between that and a scooter…”
Sorry to answer a question with a question, but why is it important to divide riders based on choice of transportation? FWIW, the Curbrider logo addresses that very issue. It doesn’t matter what you ride, when, where, or how big your wheels are. Just have fun.

    John Dale

Think about the last time you got a nasty shinner.

That was caused when one foot slipped off the pedal, and the other foot spun back and drove the pedal into your bones and flesh.

Popping-off with a standard bottom bracket is like trying to jump on a waterbed…the thing is moving underneath you. Our product is more like jumping off a stiff trampoline. You get way higher with way less effort.

Of course, if you got no flow all bets are off.

    John

That post from Duncan was one of the best things I’ve ever read.

Getting hurt(shinners) riding your bike is no reason to modify it to the point that it doesn’t work. Why not throw a damn engine on there while your at it so we can be more like a sport that isn’t ours.

Please don’t bastardize BMX more than it already is by calling this a pedal. Pedaling takes some physical effort. This is a scooter product.

  • Toby

Don’t give a fuck about all this “it’s a scooter whinging” – so?
Who gives a fuck what you call it – it looks like a fun thing to try out.
For gawds sake calm down kiddies. Theres really more important things to get wound up about than recreational sports fads/innovations/products.
    For faaarrrcks sake!
That said…doesn’t it knock your balance out having your feet next too each other (it’s much easier to be knocked over/harder to keep your balance – when your feet are together)
Also won’t it mean you stand much taller on the bike?
Definately be interested to try a pair though…

I did stand up a bit more on my bike the first time I tried it, but compensated by bending me knees more. Bending my knees was more feasible since they were bending symmetrically (as the body is intended to work, IMO).

As far as “knocking balance out”, hey – if it works for motorcycles, it’s good enough for me!

all i have to say is that your making bmx riding VERY VERY one dimensional with these think of how much shit you couldnt ride with these like spots on inclines or bank to walls.. you couldnt cruise the city with your friends with regular bikes or run from the police which is what BMX is all about.. look if youve still got any i will throw them on a spare frame i have and i will be 100% open minded and if they dont bend or break i will fully support you guys and tell all my buddies and post your link under my come up board name and the whole 9 yards.. im down to try it if youve got any more.. email me: yopeteypabsyo@aol.com

Good luck with this idea Mr.john dale

  • Michael Venian

    Dear John Dale,

This whole ‘invention’ and marketing of said invention is sadly based on a deep personal insecurity of yours.

The reason why no-one has considered making such a device for ramp riding / street / trails is that it’s completely pointless.

Stance is EVERYTHING in BMX, it’s there for a reason and it’s what enables a powerful pump. With a centralized stance, there is no stability, and the ‘loop out’ factor is high. Granted you can pump to an extent, but control over this pump is greatly limited. You’d have to have the balance of Chase Gouin to even manual these things for a sensible distance.

Anyone can have issues with their own personal outlook on life, or progress within riding BMX bikes etc etc….. so an insecurity develops within the mind because of these issues.

This insecurity would cause one to attempt to alter a major element within BMX in order for it to suit oneself. In this case it’s developing this terrible device and destroying 90% of what’s wonderful about the design / feel of a BMX bike, or bike in general.

Anyone can develop a de-evolutionary and pointless product and hide it under the guise of innovation. Sadly, it’s all too transparent, there’s no innovation here, just a person trying to be something they’re not.

Anyone can find a couple of random BMX riders to be on your team, that doesn’t mean anything. Try finding a rider who actually loves BMX supporting this idea. Eh… you will not be able to.

Lets no even get into your ‘chick’ marketing video… we get it, you’re straight, OK OK…… but, like I said, anyone can find a ‘random average person’ with no connection to BMX to help demolish your deep routed insecurity.

This product couldn’t be further removed from innovative if it tried.

No connection can be made between this device and riding chainless for example, it’s not even comparable. One is respectable (which is subjective) and one clearly isn’t (dead duck)

Someone just needs to start being honest with themselves, look in the mirror and call out what you don’t like about yourself. Work on real issues, don’t put energy into a completely pointless idea that just makes you look silly.

I’d love to see YOUR own personal riding clips…. I think that would answer a lot of questions, step up to the challenge dude. No doubt you’ll have an excuse or be injured or something.

    Regards,

    Michael Venian
    (who actually rides)

To right thats a shut down!

  • ryan

Fuck off and keep it in Phoenix, Arizona USA. I really hope this is not for real and some sad twat put money into this as it make a bike into nothing more then a scoter with a bmx frame.

  • Dave

I gotta be honest, this is basically going along with what Taj pointed out, that BMX is going to turn into a scooter if trends continue the path they are currently on.

My question is why, Mr. Dale, do you find it ok to insult those who criticize your product? You really aren’t winning anyone over by doing so. If anything, it makes me want to try this even less. Perhaps some people skills are something you should develop before you continue with turning BMX into something it isn’t. If you really want your feet side by side, that’s all you, but learn to take criticism with a grain of salt.

You say “why is it important to divide riders based on choice of transportation?” Well Mr. Dale, if we continue to turn everything into the same item, we will have no diversity, making everyone the same. You seem very “anit-diversity,” which makes me think of you as the Hitler of BMX. Is your next product a skateboard with handlebars?

  • fuck you john dale

i cant believe you are even going to try to justify that steven murray, a very iconic and skill bicycle rider, is now paralyzed because he was riding normal cranks and not your pump shit. that is a bold statement to make mr. john dale of redendo bmx. accidents happen. and unfortunately sometime bad accidents happen to good people.

  • um duh?

of course you have a unbelieveable response. you are giving shit out for free to kids. are these same kids going to pay for shipping? most likely not. so my question for you, john dale of redendo bmx and curbrider llc from tuscon arizona, are you that rich that you can cover the shipping costs of these atrocities to all 50 of your first emails? thats probably close to around $500 shipping which leads me to think that you must be a rich man. actually, the whole situation leads me to believe that you are a very rich man with very obscure ideas of how a bicycle can work.

sounds to me like you smoked a bit too much of that wacky tobacy and thought your idea was going to change bmx forever! turns out you came out with a product that is so asinine that you quite literally can not even give your product away. that brings a smile to my face.

  • FLOW PEDALS = SHIT

“When riding through a transition, offset feet generate an uneven torque that is dangerous and difficult to compensate for. It takes years to develop an asymmetric musculature to compensate for it”.

Look at these big scientific words “asymmetric musculature”… it takes awhile for kids to develop skill and muscle in order to walk properly, and walking can be dangerous, i mean, we have all tripped and fallen at one time or another. Therefore, we should prevent our kids, and thus ourselves from the hazards of walking and buy Segways, get the fuck outta here. Stop trying to re-invent the wheel, or this case, the cranks.

Nobody is asking for a full length video pertaining to this atrocity towards BMX, hell, we will all settle for a few clips. Lets see you drop in, and “flow” around on these.

  • FLOW PEDALS = SHIT

You can still get a shinner on these, the only difference is, the crank arm wont spin around, rather, your shin will simply slide down the pedal. I dont know about you, but ive had some pretty nasty shinners in my day and never once was it half as bad as your depiction, and never once did i think “damn shinners, im just gonna take my pedals and cranks off all together”.

This is riding a dirtbike without a motor. Analogous to jerking off without the reward at the end. WHATS THE POINT. Your video of the girl bashing the shit out of cranks is not convincing, when your pitching an idea for people to buy, they want to see the product in action. Not all the potential worst case scenarios that would lead you to buy these things.

“Hitler of BMX” – I’m speechless.

If you read every post on this page, there is some great feedback, but mostly insults directed at me. I’ve done my level best to address everyone’s comments, and hope that I haven’t insulted anyone.

Ok, so I may have gone overboard with the “dance” comment.

    Hi Michael,

Thanks for the feedback! This is excellent! Although, I think there are some facts-of-the-matter than I should address in defense of Flow Pedals.

Johnny Stevens lands tail whips with a centralized stance. A centralized stance requires some brain and muscle retraining. That said, there is no question that the rider can generate more upward force from a Flow Pedal bottom bracket. It’s easier to dial-in the pump, which means you go faaaaast.

Our testing indicates that looping-out is far more rare with Flow Pedals.

I’m no Chase, but manuals with Flow Pedals are a tad harder than dork wheelies, and a ton easier than with an offset stance. On a traditional bottom bracket, most of your weight is on your back leg with the front leg kind of hanging-out-gimpy. Granted, you can’t bitch crank with Flow Pedals.

Joey Hrding has been an associate for over a year. He’s been on a BMX bike since he was 7. He’s an unbelievable talent and if all goes well he’ll be at Woodward West this Summer and who knows what after that. He rides everything every day very well.

Flow Pedals, by definition, are chain-less. Not sure what else to say on that one.

I don’t like crashing, so I suppose that’s an insecurity. I don’t like hospitals or heavy bikes, either. I like the purity of motion of flowing/pumping on the track or in a park (always have). I found myself intentionally not pedaling even with a drive-train because I felt like that was the way BMX Freestyle was meant to be ridden. Mike Aitken is unbelievable at flow.

FWIW, putting-out a new, innovative product knowing I’d take a beating from people who don’t get the concept is exactly the opposite of insecure.

    Sincerely,

on second thought, this is just so useless it won’t even have a mild impact on bmx.

thats not a bike anymore, thats a hobbyhorse, the original hobbyhorses were made out of wood had no pedals and you had walk sitting down

Hobby Horsin? You know why the skatepark laws are the way they are? It was back in the late 80′s /early 90′s that all the classics got dozed over law suits – Del Mar, Uplands etc. There ensued a long legal battle that bmx was not a part of, skaters are why you have a new skatepark on your block! They fought the battle and won while we were sittting around talking about them. Pretty sure they never said anything about us otherwise this would not be an issue. Sorry guys but it’s your own fault

I used to live in Tucson and I have met the Redendo guy. He is way creepy, he invites very young riders on roadtrips to other cities. He is super shady and promotes worthless crap. He tries to help bikes into parks but is a worthless joke. Holy shit is he creepy though.

  • http://www.redendo.com John Dale

    Hi Ryan,

What you’ve posted is really, really shady.

At the request of these riders and their parents, I arranged a road trip to Chandler, Arizona and Mesa, Arizona. It was a great time and here are the pictures. Although you’ve done your best to make something out of this, nothing to see here folks. Time to move on.

I promote Curbrider, S&M, Fit, Metal, FBM, Profile and other American companies. I’ll let them know you think their products are worthless crap.

Here’s a short list of “RedEndo Firsts” including a brief introduction to the work we do to get bikes into Parks. I’ve written hundreds of messages to, and have had dozens of meeting with public officials regarding this issue.

most bad ass part of bmx is the chain

  • bigDickDanny

with all the getting lighter, thinner, steeper and stuff the most riders have probably gotten to the conclusion (i hope) that were riding in the wrong direction… riding big ass scooters.
one can do quite cool stuff with a scooter… barspins, quadwhips flat and like everything one can do on a bike. just 10 times easier to learn and to do. so why not just ride scooter or turn your bike into an oversized scooter. BECAUSE ITS NOT BMX!

Flow Pedals are GREAT! We just launched a new site, too…check out some of the pictures and video!

    John Dale

  • http://www.curbrider.com John Dale

Cool, man! I’m glad to hear you’re into it, too! Skating is all about Flow, and so is BMX! Seriously, the drive train only makes it harder to learn stuff, more dangerous, and takes more time to maintain! If you’re into freestyle, Flow Pedals are a superior product. If you have to get from point a to point b, drive train is the way to go.

Flow Pedals bolt to a spindle, so you can switch back and forth. They’re great for tramp bikes and foam pits, the track, or any setup that has flow.

  • http://Website Clown Full of Hate

As much as this sport has grown it’s interesting how it has stayed the same in some respects. I have been doing this shit for 20 plus years now. Maybe my problem is I don’t conform to the norm.

But I do remember putting pegs and rotors on my bike for the first time and people saying how “fucking stupid” it all was. How doing a tailwhip footplant off of a bank to fence was “gay” That bike riding “wasn’t even a sport” And anyone who was truely a bike rider in the late 80′s and early 90′s knows exactly what I am talking about. 9 out of 10 people hated it. Including its own riders. But it stuck around. But I digress…

I have tried these flow pedals for several months now so I do know what I am talking about here. I doubt many other people have done that but still think they know how good or bad they are. Ya, at first I kind of thought what the fuck am I going to do with these? But I am also smart enough to know a change needs to be made to the sport as well. So I did what I do best, I rode. This what I do like about them. They draw a clear line between poser and rider. No poser will ever touch these fucking things because it exposes them for what they really are and I love that. It’s about time.

So I can’t pedal… big fucking deal. I am in it for the sport, not the pedaling. I know 9 out of 10 riders are going to hate these now. But in a few years when you are married and overweight with kids I can laugh. Because your kids are going to want them and it will burn you up. There are not many of us out there but real riders live to change things and move it forward. And I am happy to have finally discarded my final piece of the “training wheels”, the cranks.

  • http://Website ballsack

what if the fastest rider is trying to go up a slight incline? or gain enough speed to grind up a rail from a sidewalk? hmmm? lets just flow the sidewalk cracks…

  • http://Website Jessie Freeman

Merriam Webster defines a “bicycle” as: a vehicle with two wheels tandem, handlebars for steering, a saddle seat, and pedals by which it is propelled.

So IMO, marketing this as a BMX (Bicycle Motocross) product should pretty much qualify as false advertising. This is no longer a bicycle when you remove the cranks, it’s a scooter. Perhaps marketing them as a bicycle to scooter conversion kit would be more accurate.

The problem I see with these, is that they effectively lock you into being a park rider, or a roll-in rider. I actually have a bicycle. I have a seat that I can sit on, and I can pedal while doing so. I have brakes to stop me when I’m riding around town. I have pedals to accelerate and go places faster than I can simply push myself with my feet. If I wanted to push myself, have no seat to sit on, and no brakes to stop with I’d pick up a Razor and have at it. But a Bicycle should be able to transport you effectively around town, should be able to get you up a hill, should be able to take your ass to the skatepark, around town, to the grocery store, and back.

I have no problem w/ flatlanders using this kind of stuff if they so desire, and everyone’s allowed to use whatever they want on their own bikes… but this isn’t BMX and if you put these on your bike, don’t claim to ride a bike, call it a scooter since that’s what it is.

… if people buy these to avoid shin bites then why not spend a tiny bit of money, buy some shin guards, and still ride a bike?
