New Simple Stem?

Picture 4
New stem Simple just sent over:

“After doing massive material research we came across this High Strength Plastic, with an incredibly high molecular mass. This allows us to make a very light, yet very strong stem without compromising on the durability. We have taken this stem through a lot of testing and abuse to see how it would hold up, and so far it’s proved to last very well.

More info coming soon.”

On one hand I think I’ve seen companies do this sort of thing as a prank before using plastic prototype molds of parts, but on the other hand, Simple is run by dudes from Denmark, and Denmark doesn’t strike me as the kind of country that breeds those who are prone to plan a practical joke. But what the hell do I know. Should be interesting either way.

before the hate comes in… none of you know how or what kind of plastic it is. neither do i but if its strong enough not to be stripped when u tighten the bolts then there is no reason why it would slip and even less of a reason that it would break.

now lets see the inbreeds fight over someithing they cannot know anything about

true dat. is the 9-5 gig a liitle tough for ya?

  • http://flickr.com/daymay Day

This stem is gonna get crazy amounts of hate but the truth is plastics have been around for years that are actually stronger than metal, I’m actually quite surprised it’s taken this long for something like this to come out. Say what you want about it, but I bet this stem holds up pretty well.

Hey i don’t ride bmx cycles, but i do work at a plastic plant and this is a very smart idea. Plastic is one of the strongest materials known to man. Its lighter than metal, smoother than metal, has a higher melting temperature than metal, and is more see-through than some metals. If i was a racer i would use this front.

hahaha nice try…it’s more see-through than some metals, try all metals and what does that have to do with strength…smartass little turd. i thought it would take longer for bmx companies to start using high-tensile plastics in structural parts but obviously not…by the time we’re too old to ride, bikes will be completely made out of this shit!

Plastic just shatters, you’d have no way of knowing it’s about to fail. Metal gives a little (unless it’s headtubes recently) so if it fails you tend to know about it first. Dangerous I’d say.

you prove yourself wrong in your own post by mentioning the recent headtube fiasco, and those frames were steel. Aluminium, which most stems are made of is even more likely to snap rather than bend than steel.

must be some kind of extremely durable polycarbonate. I worked in an injection molding plant operating presses, and the pieces we put out were super strong and they were only 2-5 mm thick. I’m still gonna wait to see how these hold up though before i even consider riding plastic components.

i have a bachelor’s degree in plastics engineering, so i’m trying to provide the most educated insight on this product, not bash anybodies opinions on it. it looks like a polycarb by its translucency, but i’m sure they’re using a composite resin becuase plenty of companies are producing plastic components out of polycarbonate already and when i read this it sounded like they had stumbled upon a new resin nobody is using. the nylon parts a lot of ppl are running these days are fiber filled or glass filled nylon and you are not able to see through them at all. these fillers enhance the structural properties of plastics, especially in tensile and compressive loading conditions.

anyway.. the stem will be fine. it won’t crack or break, i can assure you guys of that. the threads, though, may be an issue. they should’ve just over-molded the stem onto metal inserts which hold the threads. polycarb has a good compressive strength (which is what the front loading screws are doing to the stem) but i’m sure a lot of users will over-tighten the stem and strip them out in fear that the stem will be too loose if they don’t

i’m anxious to see how this product turns out

makes it lighter for flatland i guess ..fuck riding that for street. what happens if u keep going over bars on nose mannys or something stupid i bet if u do it enough it’ll crack

  • http://Website dave

I could see a set of slip-in bolt/nut combo, or perhaps something similar to a mountain bike seat binder bolt, where the “nut” of it is similar to a hollow bolt, with threads on the inside to catch the stem bolt. That or do the JCPC setup, where they run a bolt into a nut that has a slot formed into the pedal. They could do something like that into the bottom of the stem, so they have steel or aluminum threads to catch, to minimize stripping out.

This could be a good setup for flatland, and possibly those who are smooth park or trails riders. But 99% of the street community will ignore any warnings from companies, run these, break them, and then whine that they are “weak pieces of crap”…just like they did with the Grim Reaper.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Johan-Vanderbal/746025246 Johan Vanderbal

To avoid a thread problem they should mold the entire stem and handle bar as one piece. Sure you cant adjust your bars then, but as long as its pretty well inline with the forks it should work, unless your a midget on a long frame or a giant on a tiny frame. Other than that, if they can make the plastic hold up in all ways, its just another way for babies to get their bikes under the 20lbs mark so they can do hop double whips. Better yet, lets make plastic frames, wheels, remove all bearings and replace with bushings, plastic cranks.

Anyone remember the video with the guys on light up frames riding down a building, soon we could do that for real. How Uber Gay.

  • http://Website an engineer

I think your refering to the Ductile / Brittle transition temperature. It’s true this affects plastics but it also affects most metals (including steel and aluminium) as well. Sadly my dad is fat, runs slow and hasn’t invented anything so i guess i loose.

  • http://Website shitstick

my dude’s dad is an aerospace engineer and when we were growing up we had skateboards made out of this plastic that wouldn’t break. when I got older i talked him into making a road bike frame out of it and the thing worked like a champ. way too much flex in the frame for me but whatever. they use it as casing on spaceships. the idea of having a high-grade plastic bmx stem probably isn’t that far off. I don’t think that the general public gets their hands on this kind of technology but I’m not sure. he built a hardtail mountain bike frame out of the plastic composite too and still rides it today, no problems at all and it weighs less than a pound.

  • http://Website Dustin

i always said about making pc stem but with aluminum reinforcements molded in for strength.

  • http://Website FatChally

I’m willing to bet that stem is not a prototype, at least not in terms of a prototype of a stem that will be produced in aluminum. Look at the bolts for bars and fork clamping they are very unusual/highend looking with really fine threads which would seem ideal for tightining into some type of HDMP (high-density molecular plastic) and reducing the risk of stripping and ensuring that the bolts stay tight and the shoulders on the bolts are kinda odd looking as well. Well its the 21st century now I guess that means its time for all sorts of plastic bmx sillyness. Cool Idea but, im oldschool and, i think im gonna be sticking with my good ol S&M topload stem, just the same as I been rocking for the last 12-14 yrs. But I am willing to bet that this thing will work and stay tight and not just catastrophically fail or anything.

  • http://Website FatChally

LOL no sooner do i look up a bit further and find a link to simple’s site saying that the PC one was just a joke, but im still from the school of thought that this could work!
