New Tree Stem.

Tree sent over a bunch of info about their new stem. I won’t bother to try and explain it, but it’s definitely a new concept. Check out more photos after the jump plus some words from Sam about how it works.

It’s a stem!! DUH!!

Here are a few spy pictures of our new stem. The stem clamps the headtube with a slit tube piece machined with a taper. As the stem bolt clamps the handlebar it also compresses the slit tube around the headtube. Its possible to adjust the bars separate from the headtube by loosening only the bolts in the front of the bar.

The stem is made from 6061 t6 aluminum. The first prototype weighs in at 7.9oz. It is proudly made in the USA at Super Rat Machine shop!

    looks solid

    Looks iffy….
I’m intrigued, a bit skeptical, and looking forward to some reviews.

Lighter than the Elementary Stem? I’m not so sure about that part.

No sharp edges at all. Nice!

why would anyone run anything other than a solid stem?

  • http://Website edwardo

looks like aluminium will wear on the steerer tube after time and flex.
    more gimmicks!
    fbm bottle neck! no bullshit.

  • http://Website doubts

Im a bit skeptical, surely the taper would just jam and would have to be pryed apart to remove the stem. Solid idea but impractical.

    word.

^ look at all these engineers!

Nice idea but not an entirley new idea, Renthal’s new mtb stem has a similar two piece design.
Love the idea of the wedge to clamp to the steerer though.

Interesting! Tree always makes great and original stuff that’s ahead of most….bet it works great! Looks clean and simple.

i worked the getup kids show here in omaha a few weeks ago and their merch guy lives n rides in austin. he was talking about this and trust me, tree know what theyre making. he designed his own lil buddy and was rocking the new “secret” cassette that is out. tree is a company to be trusted, solid.

looks a little weird / iffy to me, but all tree products are super sweet so im sure its going to be fine

I cant speak for everyone, but this is one ugly piece of metal that would never make it onto my bike. I still have a regular stem with 6 bolts, looks good and works great, why change it for just a couple ounces difference in weight and a world of difference in looks.

  • http://Website aluminum

aluminum does not flex it cracks ps every stem these days is made out of aluminum , not steal so i dont see what your complaining about

  • http://Website dummy

this stem isn’t cute enough for me I like my 1980 gt stem.

Looks good to me, does it come in black?

i cant agree more with you.

this is the first prototype model. the design might get tweaked a little bit before production release. and we will be releasing it in the color of “science!”

  • http://Website Dustin

well you could re-post one more time. that would agreeing more.

  • http://Website Jeremy

The stem clamps the steerer tube, not the headtube.

Oh, I know they are a solid company. I use their frame, sprocket, and bar ends. Don’t get me wrong, I like Tree.
I’m still interested to see how it performs in the long-run.

  • http://Website Jack

    I guess you are right. You can’t beat a six-bolt stem…
But isn’t there room (especially considering the number of bmx companies these days) for something different?

  • http://Website cutmycunt

so if your front stem bolts get a little loose, you are going to end up like Daniel Dhers did at Dew Tour this year? Complete front end destruction?
I need to see this survive some BIG DROPS and sketchy street riding before im sold.

  • http://Website happycatbasket

    @ cutmycunt

That already happens with six bolt / four bolt stems. Let half of those bolts get loose and you’re in for a good fall. Then again, you’d sorta’ deserve it if you can’t catch it and fix it before it happens.

Uh oh. Guess you can’t do BIG DROPS with those, anymore!

spell correctly bruh, i’m tired of you giving us metals a bad name

  • http://Website ride

im down with it. i want it. it looks and is described like the king setem but looks way stronger. it seems worth a try.

  • http://Website ride

    kink stem*

  • http://Website oh heck no dude

this isnt anything close to the kink stem. the kink stem has 4 bolts. the tree stem has 4 bolts. other than that, they are not even close to the same. just sayin.

  • http://Website Chaloots

whats up with that T1 stem that looks just like this but one piece with a single bolt that wedged the steerer tube. I think it was designed by the same guy. I like this stem i think it looks good and is an origional idea without being dumb but i kinda liked the T1 design better

  • http://Website samstanfield

working = money. the best one ive done so far was cannibal corpse/black dahlia. a lot of pussy generic emo hipster whatever music comes through here. but their guy was the only cool one ive talked to so far
