Do Magazines Still Count?

magz
So Streetphire has an interesting article up on their site about the current state of print in BMX. Also, they have a poll, of which the question is, what BMX magazines do you currently spend your money on? You can pick more than one and it should be interesting to see the results. What it won’t tell us, however, is what percentage of riders don’t spend ANY money on magazines, which from what I can tell, is a very large number of you.

i wish there was an ability to vote for riding bmx but not buying any print magazines anymore, and instead getting my news on the interweb. i think that stat would be worthwhile.

To be honest why couldn’t the magazine be free or really cheap? And don’t tell me there isn’t anyone that does this, http://www.focalpointbmx.com

magazines are dead.. havnt bought one in years, even when i look through em at the store its all ads a sponsored interviews and product placement.. guys who arent sposonered get no covereage even tho there so many good riders out there. the internet is open to anyone to produce and post a video, whether its shit or good… print. is. fucking. dead.

As a photographer, its a shame to see the road that print mags may or may not go down. Personally i can not stand web magazines at all, its just not enjoyable to look at or read imo. Not that there is tons on money in bmx as it is, but with other things as well, it seems alot hard to get paid for getting something published online as to print. I don’t kno many “free” online mags/publications that pay for there content, but some do. When it comes down to it tho, do i buy mags? no not often and when i do its from something that interests me, such a photo issue, or a issue with some nice shots. But i still hope they stay around for a little bit more. Id rather see whats new in a mag, once a month, instead of the same boring ass web vidoes of the same shit everyday, but its hard to avoid.

  • http://Website JAMES

its not like there expensive… hardly breaking the bank!

  • http://Website dont matter

does it even matter anymore? magazines suck, the come up sucks, kids suck, old fags suck. the only way anything is ever going to “count” is if we stop supporting into all this mainstream bullshit. even on the come up its the same shit.. theres the same styles of riding posted daily and always the same 10 or so “star undiscovered’ riders being thrown around like someone cares. im ranting but seriously fuck the come up fuck websites fuck everything ruining the fun of riding just to boost an ego or wallet

  • http://Website J

I think mags play a large role in bmx and its sad to see that people are so negative about them! yea anyone can make a website and blog about new riders and news in bmx, but it takes alot of hard work to build up a magazine every month and bmxers should appreciate that.
I know when i was a kid i would always look forward to getting ride to see what was goin on in bmx, seeing my faverote riders shredding on some amazing looking pictures and i know i hoped one day i could make into a mag! i guess it gives you something to aspire too… PRINT. ISNT. DEAD!

  • http://Website Anonoo

Yeah, I’m sure the results will be really accurate; it doesn’t even load properly when you try to vote. Real good system guys. Try going to the legal sales that publishers legally must reveal, not some dun-ass attempt to try and do a poll. It might be worse than all the “votes” Bush’s opponents apparently didn’t receive in the 2004 U.S. presidential election.

For utterly broke teenage riders 15 bucks (That’s what mags cost in New Zealand) isn’t exactly nothing.
FocalPoint is badass I must say.

  • http://Website James Brawn

We only get RideBMX here in SA and if I could get my hands on more magazines, on a regular basis, I’d buy them all. I used to subscribe to RideUK and DIG but money got tight due to exchange rates.

If I find a mag in some random mag shop, I buy it. Got a waist high pile of mags at home and loads on my desk at work and it’s a blast to read through them and see the changes within bmx over the years.

The net is great for getting your instant bmx fix, and you can’t view a video on paper but magazines are something special.

    Long live print!

  • http://Website kickit

you are never going to be able to look through your stack of old blogs in your room, and you certainley cant flip through the internet taking a shit, so I say that print beats out the web. Not to mention color and image quality of print vs a screen.
There are a lot of mags covering BMX though, a fair amount of them do cover more underground riders. Its pretty much just Ride US and PLUS that suck

  • http://Website kickit

also at the moment mags have much better design and layout, something websites are not up to speed with yet. They may need to hire a designer or two so they can have things looking top par all the time

  • http://www.streetphire.co.uk H Man

Yo I dont know why it wasnt loading properly when you tried but its working find at the moment. Don’t usually have a problem with it so I’ve no idea what was wrong.

In answer to your question about the legal side of things, magazines dont have to print their figures if they dont want to. This is why I was wanting to “try” and conduct this little experiement because there are a load of BMX mags who dont reveal the true number of sold magazines, instead they just give you the “gone to print” figures.

I know this wont be accurate but I wanted to try and see what happens. Give it another go if you want, it should be working

There’s nothing better than having a tangible printed magazine in your hands. Being a graphic designer being able to hold and actually have physical product plays a big part in my books. Sadly there are a few major draw back for print. With huge growth of internet blogging and site such as The Come Up, Streetphire and Defgrip no news is safe exclusively for print. A prime example is the latest Issue of Ride (with baz on the cover) which only came out a few days ago. Flicking through half the content was out of date. There was a review of the Macneil Gary Young Frame whom has recently started riding for sunday and had a huge interview all about Stay Fit (with a huge Chase D photo) before half the team left for cult.

My point is the internet is changing what content is relevant for print. Dont get me wrong i love reading interviews and looking big photo features that are exclusive for print. That stuff would never be put online but the way in witch the internet is being used to share the up to date news on sponsor changes, videos and general bmx gossip is unbeatable.

I’m pretty sure the Internet is just a fad.
It’s not going to be long until folks are like “oh hold on, any joker can do this, it doesn’t count”.
And then the internet will die out.

I have to say after not riding or reading anything bmx related for 4 years and just getting back into the scene things have changed. Ride US is a complete pile of crap, its paper thin and the news is a month old, the only magazine I still read is digbmx. I used to love magazines and buy them all the time, but the lack of quality has really pushed me away.

  • http://wwwattheendoftheroad-schnell.blogspot.com/ Schnell

Have a subscription to dig and ride uk. I wouldn’t have it any other way, thats how I get my bmx fix besides a good dvd/vhs. This site is used mostly by me to see what is wrong with bmx,and what not to do when the Delco video drops. Sure sometimes the content on here is cool,so is being ignored by the webmaster when you email them inside news about injuries and stuff and it never gets posted. Its all good, Bmx is being run into the ground by a bunch of 13 year old savages who can 540 air before learning feeble grinds, something horrible is happening. And people who complain that I cant find dig, FUCKING PICK UP YOUR PHONE AND GET A SUBSCRIPTION IT BEATS JERKING OFF TO MARK WEBB’S NECK TATTOO ON THE INTERNET.

yea but the bad part about mags is that its a total one sided approach to riding or any sport or activity. on the net; when you have pages like tcu, defgrip, sprfls, and shredthegnar anyone can have an input on anything. in the magazine world everything is always moving always trying to find that last few seconds of time to get a scan done or develop negs it gets to be overwhelming. im not saying its not fun; which it defintetly is, but theres also a sense of limited productivity or creativness bc sometimes what you may want cant or wont work for the spread that youre doing. its hard for paper to change drastically or to use chemicals to enhance the pages. its too expensive anymore and to do it would run a smaller output to cost ratio. i parted with dig 6 months ago and im not missing it. im online more and since im no longer in school i dont sit and read em like i used to. id rather be out riding having fun than trying to read disengenuous stories in small print on multiple colored backgrounds.
