How Magazines Can Save Themselves.

Just read a super interesting article on Tech Crunch about one person’s theory on how magazines can save themselves from their seemingly inevitable death. Basically he states that magazines should put ALL their content online so that their websites aren’t looked at as being second rate content that wasn’t deemed worthy of print (which is something Jared Souney sort of touched on in his recent interview I did) and just beef up 1 or 2 stories per issue. That way they don’t lose out on their income from print advertising, and they make their websites far more powerful. Some people might then deem magazines useless and just switch to reading the website, but the additional ad revenue from the website would help compensate for that.
BMX magazines are a little bit different because a huge percentage of riders buy magazines “for the pictures”. But it’s still an interesting idea.

my image on magazines as long as you can put the “dvd” or clip after the issue comes out its legit uyntil some magazines figure out the stimulus plan this wont happen…..alll jokes aside magazine have to rely on dvd companies such as props not to put out the dvdsm or even clips of “bangers” before it reaches the news stands otherwise “magazines” in any catorgory will seem a certain but unfortunate fate…

Keep in mind that magazines are real, they actually exist and you can buy them, open them, look at them, rip pictures out of them, put it away for other people to read, find it years later and look back on how far things have progressed. See the history of BMX month by month.
And I am not saying any of this because I work for a magazine. 100% that is how I feel. All this magazines going away talk is insane.
The last time I checked, there were literally hundreds of magazines on the shelves at barnes and noble. And they only carry a fraction of all magazines out there.
Food for thought!
i actuaaly like your riding jeremy ahahh and that is awesome….as a kid i had magazine photos as wall paper and grew up reading ride and dig…..but its not like that anymore kids got computers
“All this magazines going away talk is insane” …. No offense man, but how could you seriously say that? A gigantic portion of magazines have already gone away. Every BMX magazine is struggling in very obvious, blatant ways. Magazines are an antiquated means of obtaining information and you know better than anyone how drastically circulation and sales have decreased. I understand you like print. But that face is pretty meaningless, especially since almost every rider I know under the age of 18 buys an average of 0 magazines a month.
Magazines need to stop clinging to prehistoric notions of why what they do is important, and focus on doing what it is their job to do in the first place; deliver information to their target market the best way they can, whether that means printing magazines or writing blogs.
Adam, just shut up about magazines already. It’s not like you care if they survive. I’m sure you hope bmx mags die so you get more traffic. Your hidden agenda is transparent. Take your own advice, stop pretending you are important and focus on doing your job, stealing news from other websites.
The internet is a fad haha
so basicly he’s saying magazines should not be magazines?
Magazines have always been media companies and not just magazines. All the magazines have put out DVD’s, had websites etc.
Hey, Murdoch thinks he’s going to charge people for online news, all print media is looking pretty fucked IMO.
I personally have thrown out the idea that the idea of a monthly magazine is antiquated. The whole point of a monthly magazine is to get news out in a timely fashion, but with a two – three month lead time and competing with a medium that gets news out in 2 – 3 minutes it’s silly. So, stop that, give up on timely news and focus on stuff that the web doesn’t do well and make the magazine an event. A three hundred page quarterly phonebook full of interesting stories about interesting people would be something that, I think, could sell. Shift all the news stuff online and make the magazine for BIG STORIES.
Just a thought.
I agree. Less magazines per year would save costs on shipping, paper costs etc and create a drastically more appealing product. The 12 issue a year model really needs to be revisited.
Adam, I respect you to a certain extent: In only the first lines you begin to introduce the topic but quickly go to use the word “he” instead of initially introducing the name of the original author to the readers. Tell me.
Clicking the link is an option?

I think one answer is photography. It’s like you said, when readers buy mags, it’s usually now for the photos. make the magazines more like annuals…similar to what G. Edward Jones suggested. kinda like those design and illustration annuals that have been produced each year for decades. glossy pages, great photos…I’d buy it.
a big reason why there’s so much controversy about all of this is because these media companies have it in their heads that they’re only good for producing printed material. they’re not. they’re media companies…they can produce anything they please.
Also, the magazines/annuals could come with t-shirts, DVDs, whatever. same thing with the music industry. if they don’t want people to DL songs for free, make it worth my while to go to the record store and buy your product outright. sell the songs via thumbdrive, just package the thumbdrive in some limited edition piece of ephemera.
yeah man pretty much every magazine worth its salt has been (slowly) doing that shit for the past 6months or so, thrasher being a good example.
