I think one answer is photography. It's like you said, when readers buy mags, it's usually now for the photos. make the magazines more like annuals...similar to what G. Edward Jones suggested. kinda like those design and illustration annuals that have been produced each year for decades. glossy pages, great photos...I'd buy it.

a big reason why there's so much controversy about all of this is because these media companies have it in their heads that they're only good for producing printed material. they're not. they're media companies...they can produce anything they please.

Also, the magazines/annuals could come with t-shirts, DVDs, whatever. same thing with the music industry. if they don't want people to DL songs for free, make it worth my while to go to the record store and buy your product outright. sell the songs via thumbdrive, just package the thumbdrive in some limited edition piece of ephemera.

I agree. Less magazines per year would save costs on shipping, paper costs etc and create a drastically more appealing product. The 12 issue a year model really needs to be revisited.

Magazines have always been media companies and not just magazines. All the magazines have put out DVD's, had websites etc.

Adam, just shut up about magazines already. It's not like you care if they survive. I'm sure you hope bmx mags die so you get more traffic. Your hidden agenda is transparent. Take your own advice, stop pretending you are important and focus on doing your job, stealing news from other websites.

Adam, I respect you to a certain extent: In only the first lines you begin to introduce the topic but quickly go to use the word "he" instead of initially introducing the name of the original author to the readers. Tell me.

I personally have thrown out the idea that the idea of a monthly magazine is antiquated. The whole point of a monthly magazine is to get news out in a timely fashion, but with a two - three month lead time and competing with a medium that gets news out in 2 - 3 minutes it's silly. So, stop that, give up on timely news and focus on stuff that the web doesn't do well and make the magazine an event. A three hundred page quarterly phonebook full of interesting stories about interesting people would be something that, I think, could sell. Shift all the news stuff online and make the magazine for BIG STORIES.

Just a thought.
