Here is another twist although it hasn’t been entirely confirmed: Funny that Ride UK is so worried about print staying viable as rumor has it that they told all of their contributors that if they contributed to the free, upstart, UK based magazine, CASE, they would never work for RIde UK again.

To me it personally seems that the only contributor that makes Ride UK still worth reading is Walter Pieringer and he’ not even from the UK. Make note, Englishmen – if you want to keep your readership you need to figure out a way to make the way you cover the UK scene more interesting. It just doesn’t work the way it is now. The issue that had Sebastian Keep on the cover was still fairly good but the cover and the amazing Iraq article, written by Walter is what saved it. Nathan Williams’ and Dugan’s interviews were also very good, thanks to Mr Pieringer again.

Try reading an american bmx magazine….all the swearing is edited and interviews are 2 pages long, its bullshit they edited that interview but…at least they dont edit everything

I cant even get a bmx magazine in my area in canada. There are none on the shelves anymore, ridebmx is gone, dig is gone, even those super short little ones called chase are gone, I think those were canadian only though, but they were really good. I havent bought a bmx mag in over 5 years though.

The come up is the TMZ of bmx and i will proudly shell out a few dollars to read well written articles and see good quaulity photos. This seems very childish and I wouldn’t care to read about it anyway.

Let’s not ignore the hard fact that RideUK will always be better than RideUS because it does a far better job of covering the whole bmx scene and what goes down. You will never see articles on roadtrips to places like Morocco, Malta, Greece, Iraq or Bulgaria in RideUS simply because the average American has this deluded idea that they can see the entire world in America. RideUK is my favourite magazine because of this, they get me excited to see where BMX has taken all these people and then they reflect on the culture and their attitudes toward riding. And no I don’t work for them or whatever but why should they sink to the level of other’s immaturity in pointlessly starting shit between people when we are all BMXers who should get along as we all share something that for most is one of the best things in our lives? I think they showed professionalism in their actions but hey I don’t know any of the guys or the facts of the matter and then again neither does 95% of people who have an opinion on the matter. TCU doesn’t have nearly as much overhead as a print magazine, so they can afford to lose some ad revenue (not that they’d want to). Print magazines don’t have that luxury, unfortunately.

I’m normally against censorship,but you have to keep in mind what a comment like that could mean for a magazine. Legitimate journalists don’t publish unfounded rumors and heresay. Is Lacey a liar? is he putting words in morris’s mouth. I doubt it, but if I were Ride UK, I wouldn’t post a comment like that unless I could fonfirm it. That’s the difference between a legitimate news outlet and a tabloid/gossip column. CONFIRM BEFORE PUBLISHING. And if you can’t confirm it, cut it out.

So, I think they did the right thing. The only other option would’ve been to confirm Lacey’s comment by calling up Morris and asking if he actually said that stuff… but that would be stirring the shitpot and all the flies would come a’runnin.

yeah I totally agree with you I was just really bored…I usually go on RideBMX anyway because they post the videos then adam steals them haha. I hate the fact that every time i come on here he gets $0.05 but I like to think that by ripping him a new arsehole where ever possible I detract from his earnings as advertisers will put less confidence in him. At the end of the day I am just wasting oxygen so I’m gonna go ride now cos the sun came out to play!

When was younger i used to not be able to wait for the next ride to come out, to read about the latest comps, riders,ridin etc. magazines lost that edge with explosion of the internet where you can now find out the latest coming and going within seconds without having to wait a mounth or so.
The other thing which i used to love about reading ride was that they had some well written articles for example the scene checks and interviews which jeff stuwart did stand out in my memory. They have lost this as well ,any stories i have read over the last couple of years have been complete wank, execpt for walter peringer’s article on Iraqi which was excellent.
The last issue i brought which was a one off as wanted to see some photos and read some bits about a local spot. I read the article in question and all the dude was going on about was nikes postion in bmx and all that bollocks, all i know is nike built us a new spot and paid riders to do it. do we care talk about the ridin and intersting shit. all i know i won’t be bother with buying ride again. I have faith that CASE magazine will keep print alive and well and in safe hands

Because of Steven Federal had the top selling frame at the time of the split. Ive always loved to watch Dan ride but what would he benefit by saying that in a interview? Ride didn’t have a cover sorted, it was 2 days before the mag went to print and Banners drove down to Hastings to get some crazy cover idea sorted. The only guy up for riding on a cold wet and windy midnight was up and coming rider Dan Lacey who didn’t care what time of day it was cause he just loved to ride and the premise of the 100th issue of Ride magazine seemed a pretty big deal to him. Mozza maybe was on a holiday or stealing some more companies from Seventies at the time (because thats what friends do) and Calab Kilby was busy or didn’t feel like potentially breaking his ankle bombing a set of stairs over a 4ft “100″ sign while its blowing a gale outside?

And you American readers may not think that keeping the BMX industry in the UK is of any benefit to you guys but thinking about it Seventies was the biggest importer of US brands like Animal, S&M, Fit, Primo, Lotek, Orchid, Little Devil, Terrible1, Metal and a shit load more which directly helped you guys out and keeps the US industry going because we (the UK) poured money into it.

Seventies as a company also organized more jams than you can think of, supported more riders and independent jams than you have had hot dinners and been there through the hard times keeping your companies alive!

i didnt say it was a bad thing, stop crying. when people have a lot of money some people have properties just lying around and “spare”warehouses. when you got big money a few ramps isnt that much, some people have none.as simple as that.

This whole thing is retarded, everyone at 4down is rad and they do what they do because they love it AND to make a living, why does it have to be one or the other? Ian and Dean are both BMX legends and in my experience really good dudes who care about BMX and their riders and try to put as much back in as they can.

That said everyone I’ve met at Seventies including Lacey have also been really cool, Stu Dawkins is a legend in his own right and you can’t deny what they have done for BMX over the years either. It sucks that the split has meant old friends falling out but that’s between them and no one else, how anyone outside Seventies can blame Ian for wanting to go his own way is beyond me. The fact that both companies have co-existed for this long proves that the market is big enough for both of them and competition can only be good for the consumer.

As for Ride they are in the unfortunate position that they rely heavily on both companies advertising revenue and therefore will be unwilling to print something that stands to offend someone at either in case they lose the advertising they need to run the magazine. I personally think it sucks that they censored what was said (especially after being on the receiving end of their desire to cause controversy when it won’t harm their advertising revenue (no hard feelings by the way)) but I can understand why they did it and I also recognise what they have done for UK BMX over the years.
