the difference in balance and body movement while wearing one is relativey minor in most cases – but if you’re riding the x-games and you need to be riding to your full capabilities then you probably don’t want to add extra unknowns into your riding

if there was one person to learn about head injuries from its hoffman, read his book. head trauma changes you and your attitudes and takes away many things that you may not notice immediately but will after a few months. ive had 7 concussions and broke a helmet when i got hit by a car when i was 18. its not fun, and ive seen myself and life in a different light; almost like a fog. so i hope everybody will take from this and be safe…Get Well Buddy!!!

The best and most skilled gymnasts and acrobats are training and competing with the use of landing mats, special landing pits, spotting lines, and spotters and they still do get hurt (I used to be a gymnast). Over the past decadesI have watched with horror the trend of a gradual increase in the level of risk (speed and amplitude given the ever growing size of the ramps) as the tricks of very talented BMX free stylers, snowboarders…etc. become more and more complex. These new masters (of disaster?) are performing their magic with no landing mats, no protection what so ever as they leap over metal bars, concrete barriers and concrete steps and the “soft” landing surfaces are made of asphalt. Take it from an “old timer” this is truelly crazy stuff! At what point does this race to self-destruction end? As a gymnast in my day I punished my body quite a bit but not nearly as much as it seems that some of the new generation of tricksters abuse themselves. A lot of parts in my body now hurt. Every day, all day. Think twice about your future. You may get lucky and live to get there some day… Take good care of your body and take note that we each get one set, one time.
