Seriously what the fuck is wrong with the world? BMXers have been doing amazing things on bicycles for 20+ years. But somehow this Danny guy comes out and does some crazy stuff on his mountain bike and gets 30 million Youtube views, 260 comments and a VW commercial. I’m not hating on Danny, he might be a nice guy and all but it rubs me the wrong way that what he gets all this attention just because he does this shit on a bike that isn’t built for the task. It’d be like if I showed up at the Tour De France on my BMX bike, no brakes, 4 pegs and all, and I finished it. Would it be impressive if I finished the race? Yes. Would it make me cool? No, it’d make me a douchebag who should have just bought a bike suited for the task at hand.
UPDATE: I just wanted to clarify my issue with this since unsurprisingly, many of you were too dense to understand what I meant. I don’t think that Danny is unskilled, he’s obviously very good at what he does, my point is that there are so many BMXers doing stuff similar to what he’s doing here, but better, that aren’t getting credited. Watch this video and tell me that you don’t think Garrett Reynolds could do everything in this video, but bigger, faster and smoother. He could. He could do barspins and tailwhips inserted in most of the tricks too. But because Garrett does his tricks on a little BMX bike and Danny does his on a big goofy mountain bike, Garrett remains a cult hero while Danny gets a VW commercial. If Garrett, Dakota and Sean Burns were all also starring in VW commercials, there wouldn’t be a blog worth writing here and I wouldn’t think there was any injustice going on.

Adam, your argument is flawed in one way. The bike he is on was designed for this type of riding, It might not be your choice, but that doesn’t change the fact that this is its intended purpose. A Trials bike and components were made to hop, drop, and spin, exactly what is in the video. Comparing it to riding a brakeless BMX bike in the Tour De France doesn’t make sense. A BMX bike wasn’t build to be ridden long distances efficiently like a road bike so why would you. You wouldn’t.

That is a trials bike, other then those few shots at the concrete park most of this riding is trials riding. His bike is built exactly for what he rides. A BMX would make no sense at all for most of that shit. Danny is rad, it’s awesome a rider is getting something that big. Also, you say that Danny’s bike is not meant to be used the way he uses it. You’re wrong. I suppose you could argue it, but it doesn’t make you any less wrong. He rides trials with a trials bike. Granted he does throw some bmx aspects into his riding, but fundamentally he is still riding trials.

Every skatepark around my area in BC has a local group of DJmtb kids who rip, and its fuckin rad, I show up on a bmx and we play bike, we do alot of the same tricks so whatever. Trials bikes rely on suspension to do a lot of that. Being able to spring 10ft with no speed is impossible on a BMX.
The reason why this is popular is BECAUSE it’s goofy and like parkour. BMX shit is too intricate for the most part of the lay people to understand, but this guy is using obstacles found in everyday life and going slow enough for people to understand.
Really though, people love parkour, which is why this is much more popular for commercial use.

He’s a trials rider, on a trials bike, which is built for the job, admittedly he does through a lot BMX tricks into his riding, But isn’t BMX these days heavily influenced by skateboarding? everyone takes influences from other places, thats just being creative with your riding, and why hate on mtb, he enjoys riding, you enjoy riding, we all enjoy riding, and does it matter what size your wheels are or precisely what ‘genre’ of trickery you decide to go into. You are right about Garret Reynolds being able to do the BMX style moves in this video better, and there would be quite a few trials bikers who could do the trials parts of the video better. Marketing and VW paying someone-They want to show you can fit stuff in that car like a big mtb, although it would be cooler to have an edit of 3 bmx guys doing similar rad stuff and having them and all their bikes fit in it(and I think that goes better with VW’s friends-style outlook) however when it comes to paying someone, it would just be cash or they’d have to split the car or give three cars(just a lot more complicated or expensive). So really it just comes down to VW marketing being cheap, lazy, or a combination of the two.
Yeah, Garrett Reynolds cant do the exact same stuff as Danny does. But the point is that he can do similiar, if not better, tricks that would suit the commercial more. Sure trials riding looks pretty amazing, but bmx just looks gnarlier and more reckless, which would fit theme of the commercial.

The edit was good, so many edits get put on this sight of amazing riders but the camera work is shit and with shit camera work people head for the ‘x’ and close the window….his original edit was easy watching and many people who had no interest in bikes could watch it!
It’s sad so much hate can come from such a good web video. He incorporated a few different riding styles, so to me it seems he must really enjoy all aspects of cycling. Refreshing and fun to watch.
