KMC Chain Review.

Kurt put up a review of the new KMC chain. DK made a splash with their version of this same idea a month or two ago, but KHE apparently got it out first. Taiwan makes the world go ’round. You want my opinion? No offense to DK or KMC, but this entire concept is retarded and useless anyway.

not the same as the DK chain. the DK has solid top piece, not a cut down the middle, dk should rovide alot more support.

the shadow chain is a horrible idea too. putting bends in something that its only function is to resist tension is fundamentally flawed.

Chains don’t need to be re-done. Overkill for sure. Add some flat screen tvs to it? That might work….kmc half-link chain sucked when I rode it awhile ago. Shadow chains for the win!

no point is right, all half link chains are bad. why do you even need a full half link chain? all you could ever possibly need is one half link. think about it.
If you know me, I blow through chains like they are made out of paper bags. Not really that much, I’d hate my life if that was the case… but I’ve definitely broke plenty of links in my day
Agree with point. Half-link chains are, by design, faulty. Because you have one kinked plate and not two straight plates, the chain is constantly wanting to straighten itself out, leading to stretch. Then, add the mushroomed pins that most companies use, and you have a very small piece of metal that sees and extraordinary amount of forces applied to it. Bottom line, 510-X and stop thinking about it.

510s break easier than regular shadow chains. if you want a real chain get a wipperman
“510s break easier than regular shadow chains” please explain, because this is physically impossible. all hall half link chains are bad, would you want bends in your spokes? its almost the same idea, they’re both meant to resist tension. if you put bends these types of parts you just give them room to stretch, which is exactly what you don’t want them to do.
wippermans aren’t bad, but they’re no different than KMC. the gold 710sl is my favorite chain ever. its the smoothest rolling chain because if the TiN coating and its max tensile is relatively close to the 510x.
bottom line is that these new “closed top” chains don’t fix anything that a sprocket guard can’t do better. instead of beefing up the chain so it can take hits better, just get a MDS or something with a sprocket guard so that the chain never gets hit in the first place.
or just get the khe collaspe chain

the short pins and the fact that the pins are hollow are the worst part of these chains. just breaking the chain tears the side plates and splits the pin about half the time. if you want to innovate halflinks make the weak part stronger and stop making them weaker.
