It’s great to see that Brian can maintain such a high level of riding while having some pretty serious responsibilities over at ESPN.com. Brian Tunney has a great interview on Defgrip. The following excerpt in particular provides a sentiment I’ve been thinking about a lot lately:

“It seems like most of the BMX sites out there wait until TheComeUp is updated for the day before doing their own updates. I’m not a fan of that approach. It turns what could be legit BMX media sites into aggregates that don’t deliver editorial, or pander unabashed advertorial. And I sometimes wonder where BMX on the Web would be without Apple-C and Apple-V. I assume that other folks in the BMX world have the same frustrations, and as a result, have created their own outlets to focus on what they want to see in BMX, like Least Most, Flat Matters, Holeshot, Clicked, 23Mag, Defgrip and a ton of others I’m forgetting. That’s a promising step for BMX on the Web. People are creating their own content to produce the type of BMX coverage they want to see, and I am a fan of that.”

True that. Every day I look forward to checking my Tumblr because I follow a lot of great hip hop blogs (check out Cocaine Blunts, Tumblin’ Erb, Real Nigga Tumblr and Yayo Dancing) that are run by people who don’t make much, if any, money from their blogs but still take the time daily to write about music just because they really like it. Why is BMX an activity with thousands of loud-mouthed blog commenters and messageboard tycoons but only a handful of interesting blogs? If Kyle Stark (or any similar messageboard shittalker) had a blog that possessed half the wit of his BMX Board posts, I guarantee it’d be a hit, even if I sometimes read his posts and want to cause him physical harm. Why was there only one Top 10 Video Parts of 2010 blog online that I’ve seen? 100+ people took the time to comment but I haven’t seen anyone else formally lay out their own picks.

Anyway if you’re reading this and you believe you have something to say about BMX whether it’s your own scene or your opinion on the latest web videos, start a site, it takes 2 seconds to start a Tumblr or a WordPress and BMX is a small community; if you write even one post that people enjoy enough to link to from their Twitter, Facebook or their personal blog you will start to gain a following and that could open a lot of doors for you in the industry (or y’know, you could just write something that a lot of people enjoy which is rewarding too).

Origin of the Barspin

Tunney wrote up a article about the origin of the barspin over on the ESPN blog. It had Chris Moeller’s part from an old S&M video which had a barspin in it. Definitely a good read for sure. Imagine landing a half barspin on vert? That would be so scary!

Jared Souney and Brian Tunney teamed up for a free BMX magazine back in 1999 that only ever had one issue before Jared took a job at Ride and Tunney got busy working for Dig. Jared posted a PDF of the issue on his site and it’s awesome, I read the whole thing. Reading the old news column which consists almost entirely of companies who don’t exist anymore is good for a laugh. The article about the internet is also funny, crazy how times have changed.

Fudger Thinks Chris Duncan Sucks Dicks.

So Ryan Fudger fucking hates Chris Duncan. Ryan usually seems pretty grumpy about something or other, but Duncan got on his nerves to the point that he wrote a blog about it. It seems that he was prompted to write about Duncan on the basis of this interview that Tunney did with him, since they appeared literally 3 posts apart on my RSS. Duncan is often annoying and probably pretty mentally unstable as far as I can tell, but he doesn’t really seem like a bad dude. But then again I don’t know shit about the subject and more importantly, don’t care. The whole beef is a shame too since before Duncan’s stoke value plummeted it seems like Ryan and Chris used to be good friends, based on the photo above.

Check out this write up on the history of the Primo V Monster, this one about resolving copyright issues on Youtube and this review of the DK Random Wrench. Not sure if he needs the help, but if you have any idea for future Brian Tunney articles, leave them in the comments and maybe you’ll inspire him.
