They just put this up on The Trip and it really got me thinking. This came out 2 years ago. Garrett was working on his Deadline part then, just like he is now (although I think he’s probably pretty much done and is filming primarily for Fiend now) and these were some throw-away clips that he chose to use for a Premium commercial. And this stuff is still so, so good. This came out before his Props bio, before the Fiend promo, before Road Fools 18. He’s probably hates these clips.

I haven’t seen his Deadline footage, but it’s already the stuff of legend. I know people who have seen it and they all talk about it like it was some sort of religious experience. They usually can’t even name off a single trick because they were so overwhelmed. I heard about a line that he did the other day at a rail spot which nearly everyone in So Cal has ridden and what he did is so far beyond anything I’ve ever heard of anyone else doing that I probably asked the person 10-15 times if they were joking before I finally bought it. I still think they might be fucking with me. It’s that insane.

Garrett is one of the only riders out there who has to intentionally throttle his footage. You know how riders do a new trick or line and then put it out the next day? Garrett’s the opposite of that. He has footage of RIDICULOUSLY progressive stuff that he did 2 or 3 years ago that he still hasn’t put out. Everyone else in BMX is striving out, trying to let everyone know how good they are but Garrett is doing the opposite, he’s sitting on his footage and waiting.

What’s really funny is that Garrett will probably cringe while reading this. He hates the attention. He hates the spotlight. You can see it in his eyes while he’s doing his NORA Cup acceptance speeches or his X Games interviews. And while that would be a death kneel for the average pro, his riding is so ridiculous that it doesn’t matter. Most of his peers have 5 or 6 paying sponsors. He has one. He has the entire BMX world captivated because of how much footage he DOESN’T put out. I can’t say I’ve ever seen anticipation for a video like we are seeing for his Deadline part. I can only say I feel like I’m 15 again thinking about it and in this high speed world, that’s something to be thankful for. You simply can’t say enough about how incredible this kid is on a bike.

Nike recently got Chad Kerley, Dennis Enarson, Garrett Reynolds and Nigel Sylvester out to Texas to film a web video and this is the trailer. It’s good to see the crew back together. There isn’t much riding in this, but what there is… mindblowing. Really stoked to see this.

How insane is it that the Deadline video has basically been in the works since this? Garrett’s got a good interview up on Ride where he talks about all things Deadline. The video is still coming (he says Spring) and he also weighs in on the whole VX/HD debate:

“I’ve always been a fan of BMX looking raw. That’s why I like SD footage. I have respect for HD, it’s the new way, it’s more-clear and it looks more professional, but something about the VX I still like more. I guess the colors aren’t over saturated, you can get closer, and when done right, to me, looks more like real life. Also, when you watch VX there aren’t any distractions—it’s all focused on the riding. And if your camera gets hit it’s not as much money to get it fixed and if you’re in a bad neighborhood and someone holds you up with a gun it’s not such a big loss, but there is going to be a day when SD is dead due to lack of parts for the cameras and them all being discontinued and only one shop still fixes them—this guy Kerry, from Video Electronics in Boston. Regardless, don’t take my opinion to heart, I love all riding footage and I think actually hating on others footage because of format is retarded—there’s going to be a day when everyone has to go HD.”

Sad but true. Check the rest of the interview here. Also scroll all the way down to the bottom and peep that sequence. That spot is in Long Beach and we are all absolutely shocked that he did that gap to wallride, nevermind he had the momentum to 5 off the loading dock after.

Garrett Reynolds does the craziest shit every time we see anything from him. And Big Daddy is always doing something insanely hard while looking like a mental patient doing it.
