“So over the summer at one of the Dew Tour stops Eddie from 50/50 BMX said he had heard we had some super fast, super good wheel builder at Albe’s. He then asked how fast Turbo could lace and true a wheel. I really had no idea as we had never timed Turbo. He always built wheels spot on for everybody from Chad Kagy to Steve Mccann, to little Trevor down the street. So just to sound impressive I told Eddie that Turbo could lace and true a wheel in 19 min flat. Eddie must have been impressed because he put the 50/50 wheel guy, Danny Schmucker to work. After 6 months or so of trying to beat Turbo’s petend record of 19 min Danny prevailed and built a wheel in 17min and 39sec. Pretty impressive! Danny and Eddie were so proud that they posted this feat of theirs on the 50/50 blog and called Turbo out. I don’t think Turbo was ever worried.”

    No spoke prep? No oiling the nipples? No setting the spokes? No measurement of spoke tension? No side stressing the wheel? No measurement of dish? I call shenanigans.

    That wheel isn’t close to being finished. Turbo’s a great wrench, and a fine wheel builder, (and a sweet dude,) but this competition is a joke.

    damn guys, I’m not gonna prep the spokes on a wheelset that I plan on thrashing anyways. wheel maintenance beats the hell out of 12 hours of initial lacing

    15 mins and 5 seconds!!!!!! that is crazy!!!!!! it took me 2 hours to do my back 48 spoke. but i took my time and made it perfect.

    I agree with GOB. its easy to lace and true a wheel straight in that amount of time but a proper wheel build gets spoke prepped, nipples get lubed where they contact the rim, spokes get set and the wheel gets stressed before measuring tension and checking for proper dish.

    Funny to see how people take this. It’s true that Turbo does put in a little more time on the average wheel as he is VERY anal when it comes to his work. If you are ever in the shop ask about some of the little things he does when he builds a wheel that noone will probably ever notice. He’s very into detail. However that wheel he builds in the video is plenty “Ready to Go” and will hold up just as well as any wheel built by anybody else using the same parts.

    sooo many of these posters dont kno shit about whell building obviously. im no master but spoke prep adds maybe 5 seconds per spoke to apply and the effects of the wheel not coming loose as easily greatly outwieght a few minuts.
