Hahahahaha just because you guys have shitty taste in riding doesn’t mean you should put down actual skill when you see it. Go watch Ian Schwartz footplant a curb going 2 miles an hour.

Mat Hoffman grew up riding in the same fearless and insane fashion that these guys present in this video. And if you honestly think that Mike Aitken and Brian Foster are better than Mat Hoffman, you should just stop riding.

  • http://Website j

honestly,i dont give a fock about ian scwartz and all that slow crap either.(though i’d say schwartz is probably a bad example because at least he’s kinda creative with his lines). you got me all wrong morbid saint! of course i respect hoffman…i’m not an idiot. i was just trying to make the point that just because it’s possible to tailwhip a bike like a million times or frontflip over a crocodile pit or some crap doesn’t mean to say that it looks good or is interesting to watch beyond possibly seeing someone kill themselves. the other point being that yeh these guys can do all these mad ‘stunts’ but most of them look like they’ve crapped their pants when they are just trying to peddle.the style of riding in this vid is just ugly to me and like g originally said it may as well be a completely different sport.

  • http://Website Brodie

Oi cunt where were the Miller clips?

  • http://Website Morbid Saint

    “ugly to me”

alright, its just ugly to you, and it’s not your preference of video, gotcha…

And it may not look good to you, but it looks gorgeous to me… and it’s probably because i dig the sickness of the trick being done, while you probably prefer the fashion in which the trick is done instead of the trick itself.

I like to be MOTIVATED (by the insanity of the riding) while you like to be ENTERTAINED (by the way in which the riding is done)

  • http://Website case

First off foster and aitken are legends…you are probably too young to realize it.

Secondly. It seems like they are doing the same thing street riders do. The same tricks over and over on different obstacles over bigger gaps. But something park has over street is the feeling you can fly unlike the baby hops to grind a foot tall box.

  • http://Website Morbid Saint

I know they are legends but neither of them is a Mat Hoffman or a Dennis McCoy either.

And it seems like it’s mostly the young guys that are into Brian Foster and Mike Aitken instead of Dennis McCoy or Mat Hoffman.

  • http://Website Will

    MORGAN WADE IS GOD!

  • http://Website g

it’s funny how stating an opinion always leads to people assuming what kind of rider you like and that you’re ‘too young’.

there’s a reason why companies unrelated to bmx are all over this type of riding like a rash and it’s because it appeals to the masses, i.e. people who don’t ride. to most people who do ride this is just circus tricks because they appreciate the subtleties of riding that they know is hard although it might not look it to the untrained eye.

  • http://Website seb

exactly what i was thinking… those dudes were cranking… but i can imagine joe and chase juicing that joint for all the speed possible…

  • http://Website j

i’m 36!!! and i understand it’s just my opinion, and if you actually read my posts you see i clearly state that these guys have mad skills…there’s no question about that.but equally where the hell is all this leading?!! its more like aerial acrobatics whilst holding onto a bike rather than what i understand bmx to be about.like i said before this type of riding and the x-games type of stuff is just getting like a circus and someone is gona end up dead.i’ve never seen a frontflip that looks good…but these guys have to do these kind of tricks to make a buck…and that sucks.(in my opinion!!!)x

  • http://Website BOB

what is the song in the begining of the video

  • http://Website todd b

haha word… that stache was killer

  • http://Website Morbid Saint

So you’re calling Mike Laird and Morgan Wade “not real riders” because they do tricks that are more difficult and you ASSUME that they aren’t having fun, and it’s your OPINION that they don’t look good?

I know how to backflip on dirt, and i know how to do a footjam whip on a bank… guess what, I have more fun doing backflips, beleive it or not. I’ve seen plenty of good-looking frontflips because a few of my friends do them (on dirt, not park) for FUN. There are plenty of un-sponsored guys that do some sick shit for the sake of doing sick shit. It feels like flying, dude.

I can guarantee you that even if the money wasn’t there, all of these guys would still be doing double tailwhips and frontflips because they think it looks awesome and fun, and they get bored of all the easy, “stylish”, beginner tricks that all the other guys are doing. And also, theres not even that much money in BMX unless you are straight up riding in the Dew Tour or something, so it’s pretty blind assumption that you say all the people who frontflip expect to make money. These guys aren’t reckless either, they know exactly what they’re doing.

I can guarantee you that Ryan Guettler is having as much FUN doing 720s as Justin Inman is when he’s flowing a set of trails, and i think Ryan Guettler’s riding looks gorgeous.

Think about if you were a guitar player, and you played more and got better, you’d get bored of songs like “Smoke on the water” and other similarly easy songs pretty quickly and you would move on to more difficult stuff for the fun of it. EASY DOES NOT EQUAL FUN.

  • http://Website j

dude, calm down.i take your point about it being fun for some people…it just don’t look that fun to me when i watch a video like this with people half-killing themselves in the process of pulling weird looking circus type tricks.the mega ramp on the x-games don’t look fun to me either…most of those guys look scared before they roll in. i’m just questioning the direction that all this is leading in…i’m not trying to say they’re not real riders, i don’t mean like that…but i do think think this is almost like an entirely new ‘sport’ and is getting so far removed from it’s roots that its hard to understand as BicycleMotoX. it seems to me like a form of aerial acrobatics performed by under-paid stuntmen. as long as they’re having fun that’s fine. what do i know anyway?!!!

  • http://Website Morbid Saint

These guys destroying themselves is actually a more classical style of BMX riding, more so then the type of riding you see today where people spend more time editing their videos then filming for them, and forcing themselves to have a “style” that they don’t have instead of trying to progress and dial in tricks and letting the style develop itself naturally as they get their tricks more dialed.

In the 1980s, Hoffman was destroying himself day in and day out progressing his sport and inventing most of the tricks we know today. In the 1990s, it was Ruben Alcantara throwin it down and busting huge flips and doing double tailwhips all on a bike that probably weighed as much as he did. What these guys in the Animal House vid are doing is exactly the same thing Hoffman was doing in the 1980s when he was inventing 900s and flairs, it’s just that the tricks are far more advanced now then they were back then.

It is BMX in it’s original, most magical, purest form where people were stoked to find out just what is possible on a BMX bike and were eager to test the limits of what can be done on it, instead of shit-talking riders that they think had “ugly style”.

BMX was founded on competition (racing, the original style of riding, was nothing but competitive) and if it wasn’t for the “circus tricks” and the competition, BMX wouldn’t even be considered a sport.

    The Reeling by Passion Pit

  • http://Website j

man,i keep trying to give you the benefit of doubt but the more you keep writing the more i realize you’re probably just a jock with a bike. shit like this is why bmx will never be as cool as skateboarding. yeh i said it. even though i respect hoffman, it’s obvious to me that he was on some sort of evil knievil trip which pushed him to the point of totally fooking his body up. at times he wasn’t really in control and he’s seriously lucky to be alive…and that’s what most of this video looks like to me. look at what happened to stephen murray…do you think he was doing double backflips for fun? and when was the last time you saw ruben do a backflip? i’m guessing he realized years ago that JUST BECAUSE SOMETHING IS POSSIBLE ON A BIKE DOESN’T MEAN TO SAY IT NECESSARILY NEEDS DOING… and that’s my whole point. by the way, i grew up racing but i soon realized at a young age that the competitive side of it wasn’t what i liked riding for. a triple tailwhip isn’t any better than a double, and neither of them look as good as 1 done well, and no amount of energy drink sponsorship is ever gona change my mind about that.

  • http://Website Morbid Saint

Has it ever occurred to you that progression can be fun? The only person im a jock to is myself and i enjoy pushing my riding… and if i were to meet you at the trails or something, i would chill with you and generally fuck around and just chill and ride… but when im in my own zone, i like to push my riding for the sake of pushing my riding because i find it fun.

I take this back to the guitar player example, If you played guitar for long enough, you’re going to get bored of playing “Smoke on the water” after a while when you start getting some chops, and after a while, you’re gonna start playing Slayer or Megadeth covers because it’s what you like, and it just so happens that what you like requires a higher skill level. Apply this same sort of logic to bike-riding.

Let’s say you’re just the casual guitar player and you tend to enjoy playing good stuff that just happens to be a little on the easy side. Fine. Thats okay. But that doesn’t mean you should so much as look down on other guitar players (i can tell you do, just by the way you talk about it no matter how much you say you don’t) just because they want to play a little faster or a little more complex, and accuse them of “being too far removed from the roots of guitar playing” in a similar way that you put it.

IT’S JUST THAT WE FIND DIFFERENT STYLES OF RIDING AS FUN, and i can guarantee you that Hoffman has no regrets for how he rode in the 80s and 90s, and Ruben doesn’t regret how hard he rode in the 90′s despite just having had back surgery. Those guys had fun pushing themselves and would gladly continue doing it if their bodies were young again.

P.S. How stuff looks is 100% completely subject to debate.

  • http://Website Morbid Saint

Another question, why is it that BMX always has to rip off some part of skateboarding culture? Why can’t BMX do it’s own thing? It seems like the whole point of BMX nowadays is to find another way to copy skateboarding

Whenever BMX does something original that nobody else is doing, they call it “circus riding”.

This is the reason that I like to ride dirt with hard tail mountain bikers instead of BMX riders, other BMX riders try waaay too hard to fit into the “scene” part of BMX and they seem to shun anybody that doesn’t ride like them. Hardtail mountain bikers are 5 times more fun to ride with and are much more tolerant.
