I know this isn’t an econ website but i feel obligated to clear some things up. The majority of jobs in China are provided by the government, and the workers are provided housing, food, clothing etc, so the low pay is distorted because the have very little to buy. And if there were no bmxer’s buying shoes from nike china wouldn’t have jobs…im not sure the exact percent but America makes up a vast majority of the worlds consumption, a consumption that the rest of the world depends on to provide jobs. China will never own America, there will be a shift(its already happening) where the US can not keep up the rate of consumption, so the Chinese will begin to become more and more of consumers(it is shocking how little they currently consume), this shift will balance the global economy. Nike is no different from any other global corporation, they are going to go to the cheapest source of labor…its common sense.

Nigel has seemed to skip the part in his bmx career where he rides real hard and works to put out an incredible video part, and went straight to the “i paid my dues now im just coasting” part of his career.

I don’t work in a factory, but I do know how my people think. I have relatives who do work in factories and they could care less how much they are paid, as long as they are paid. It’s very different in North America compared to China, work is scarce because of the large population, and people will do pretty much ANYTHING to earn money.

And why should Nike get out of BMX? Is it because we already have skate shoes like Lotek, DC etc., etc.? Every company is out to make money, Nike is just very good at exploiting those who want work. Nike is no different than any other brand out there, it’s all business.

Ask yourself this, would you start a company JUST to make a mark and never hope to make enough to retire early? I don’t know about you, but I plan to do just that. Money is money, business is business, and as long as there is a market for a certain product, every company has the right to produce goods in that sector.

You are talking about the old economic system. The majority of jobs now are provided again by large corporations wanting cheap labour. Food rations do not provide enough food, and have become scarce themselves, clothing allowances have significantly decreased over the past few years and since most Chinese citizens prefer the “American” lifestyle, consumption is actually rather high. (Which is what you pointed out)

In the sense of military strength, America is one of the strongest. They are a military country. Americans have made war a business. The more wars they engage in, the more jobs open up, the more they profit, ergo, stabilizing their economy for the time of war. This trend cannot and will not last forever, and because America has such an unbalanced economy that is essentially a capitalistic country in the purest form, where mass consumption is desired to keep the economy afloat, just like Japan, the shift in global economic power will shift towards a country that produces half the worlds goods, China. Again, solely in the sense of economic power, China will be on top, seeing as how once China pulls the bonds they’ve invested in America OUT, America will fall, and fall hard.

And I agree with you on Nike wanting cheap labour, just like any other global corporation. It’s baffling how little children know about the world these days.

I agree with you for the most part Mr. Chinese guy, except for the part where America is a military country, and that it needs war to stay strong. I think its clear that the war(s) going on now are what is hurting the economy. Military technology is very important to our economy, we are THE strongest military force by far, but what we have that China doesn’t have is technology. China has a monopoly on the production of toys while the US holds the monopoly on things that are highly advanced technology’s, things the Chinese cant just jump into and be a leader. And along with that is military technology. States will always be interested in protecting themselves, so Americas monopoly on military technology doesn’t necessary revolve around there being a war.
