Yes, compression is a mystery unknown to mankind. That’s why there’s a Help section on Vimeo and a Compression FAQ for many editors (Vegas, Premiere, FCP, etc.).

Chase has been one of my favorite riders since Fit Life, and it seems his riding has gone up another notch. Super stoked on this (minus the quality), the riding was insane.

yes Luka but even those settings arent the end all be all. If you think those faq’s are the full discusion on compression your dead wrong. Look at any website forum based on video editing and you will see many different post about compression with many different suggestions. The help section on vimeo will only give you decent results. Do u think Joe Simon uses settings he found in Vimeo Help? Not a chance.

@Matt: well, compression is usually based on trial and error. Fail to obtain the right compression the first time? Render again. It’s not that big of a deal. I mean, it’s not like you’re rendering a 3D model of a cathedral in full-res.

My own experience tells me that anything that’s about 4 mins long shouldn’t be rendering for more than 2 hours.

Also, Joe Simon is a professional filmer/editor, which makes him above all of us mortal/illiterate/semipro filmers.

It seems to me that they didn’t render this more than one time. They thought it looked good on their computers and just put it online, careless of the fact that the quality on Vimeo was mediocre.

i never understand why theres so many videos that should look better but get turned to shit cuz of export/compression. like do people just export then put it straight on vimeo without changing a thing? i understand its a time consuming and frustrating thing to just get a video exported as a .mpeg .avi or w/e you happen to choose to see it didnt come out just right cuz you had one box unchecked or the wrong framerate setting or something as stupid. but with how much time and effort the riders and filmer put in why would you not just go back and put in acouple attempts so it comes out looking the best it can? it might end up taking a couple hours(vimeo takes about 2hrs from the start of the upload to being able to view it) but i would just take some asprin and go back to square one.. and like matt said with the bajillion different cameras and editing softwares the compression settings could be argued for days by people. i think trail and error seems to be the best choice.

yeh it’s deff a compression issue. that video is only 9mb for a 3min video. like for instance a mastroni video that looks really good thats like 50secs longer was over twice the file size. thats why all the skategoat videos always look like garbage on vimeo theyre all under 15mb

@AndyG: No matter how many cameras and editing softwares there are, there will still be a few possible compression settings that will look twice as good as the ones in this video.

I mean, it’s not like there is much to argue about.
Fps (usually, there aren’t many values to choose from… at least, for these type of camera and filming), bitrate (the higher the better… keep an eye on the file size though), deinterlace method (you usually render as progressive for the web, so it doesn’t really matter that much), resolution (SD Wide = 640×360; SD 4:3 = 640×480; HD Wide = 1280×720 aka 720p = webHD), sound (higher kbps = better sound quality = bigger file sizes).

That’s pretty much everything you need to know to get a DECENT compression. I’m NOT talking about “Mutiny style” compression. These might not be the best settings, but they are still better than what was used for this video.

Expensive camera or not, Joe Simon is still the god of BMX videos.

i didn’t say it was like learning Japanese Luka. but there are more than just the 3-4 things you named when exporting a video that has to do with quality. the first video i ever edited looked great then once exported looked like garbage. after reading some forums and trial and error. i got(with a cheap 3chip panny) to look better than like 80% of videos i’ve watched filmed with a VX and edited with a mac. the point im getting at is that it’s not just compression. if you fuck up or just export it from your editing software with it’s presets its gonna prob look like garbage. If you spend a few more hours you can get the full potential out of your camera(as far as a streaming web video is concerned) rather than have your video look like this. and when it comes down to it people love quality. doesn’t matter who is in it or how good the riding is if it gives you a headache watching a minute of it.

also Joe Simon’s cam equipment and shit for editing prob totals more $$$s than anyone on here spent on their cars. yes he is the best filmer and editor in bmx at the moment but when you have thousands of dollars in shit you better take the time to make it look it’s best. and im sure Joe prob read BOOKS on it not just a few tutorials.
